LOGISTICS ADVISORY: HURRICANE IDA

Hurricane Ida struck the state of Louisiana Sunday as a category 4 storm, causing severe weather through the Southeast US as the storm moves inland as a tropical storm. The storm is considered one of the worst in the region’s history, and is having numerous effects on logistics operations both in the Southeast and nationally.

• Infrastructure Outages: Significant power and cellular network outages in the effected area – specifically New Orleans, where there is reportedly a complete loss of electrical power city-wide. Some areas of the state are completely flooded with unpassable roads. Any logistics operations in Louisiana should be considered disrupted at this time.

• Port Operations: Terminals have closed today at the Ports of New Orleans and Mobile

• Airport Operations: 90% of departures and 95% of arrivals to New Orleans International Airport have been cancelled today according to FlightAware. Cancellations and delays are also affecting operations at Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport

• National Impact: An already stressed trucking market in the US will be further strained by demand for trucking equipment to assist with emergency services, recovery, and relief operations. The availability and price of fuel elsewhere in the US are also likely to be affected by the storm

U.S. TRUCKING MARKET IN FLUX AS DOT INSPECTIONS LOOM

With annual U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) safety inspections scheduled for the week of May 2, customers should expect further disruptions to an already volatile inland transportation market. Each year, the number of available drivers and trailers in the market drops during inspections week, causing rates to temporarily spike. Inspections week – also known as Blitz Week – involves random checkpoints being set up around the country verifying compliance with DOT trucking regulations. Many drivers avoid driving during Blitz Week, restricting capacity.

Falcon is closely monitoring these disruptions in the market and is working with clients to find the best solution for their transportation needs during this period of increased market volatility.

SEVERE WEATHER ADVISORY

Falcon Maritime and Aviation remains operational through the winter storm

Seventy percent (70%) of the United States is experiencing snowfall and ice as severe winter weather effects large portions of the country. This is an unusually large storm that is bringing winter weather to parts of the country that typically do not receive snow, ice, or freezing temperatures and may not have the resources to deal with this weather. Many areas – particularly in Texas – do not have access to basic utilities such as electricity, heat, and potable water at this time.

As of midday Eastern Time on Thursday, there were 414 delays and 456 flight cancellations in the United States reported by FlightAware. The most severely affected airports were DFW, ORD, IAH, IAD, ATL, JFK, and EWR.

Port facilities on the East and Gulf coasts have closed due to the weather – including in New York/New Jersey, Baltimore, and Houston.

Hazardous road conditions have restricted trucking operations throughout the Northeast, East Coast, Midwest, South, and Gulf Coast. Disruptions should also be expected to rail service throughout the country.

Our customer service teams will remain operational through the storm to respond to your inquiries and to advise shipment status. Please understand though that these storms will present disruptions to transport that are outside of our control. We will do our utmost to keep you informed of these developments and to ensure your shipments are properly managed.

SEVERE WEATHER ADVISORY - WINTER STORM ORLENA

***Falcon Maritime and Aviation remains operational through Winter Storm Orlena.***

Severe weather caused by Winter Storm Orlena is causing logistics disruptions throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest United States. Up to two feet (61 centimeters) is expected in parts of the Northeast, with 12-18 inches expected in the New York City-area. The storm is expected to continue through Wednesday in the Northeast, causing significant snowfall and high winds to a large portion of the country. States of emergency have been declared in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The storm is restricting the movement of cargo by land up the East Coast from Washington, DC through New England, and as far west as Wisconsin. It is also disrupting flight operations. Port congestion may be at its worst in Southern California, but it is impacting ocean ports and rail ramps across the US. Our operations team is closely monitoring this fluid situation to mitigate the impact on our clients' supply chains as much as possible. This includes working daily with carriers to identify available capacity, and to bypass the worst-effected ports and ramps when possible.

This Thursday we're throwing way back to the 1950s. Fresh out of military service, our founder Joe Shelala started a business exporting Piper training planes to Europe. With some creative thinking, he revolutionized aerospace logistics by becoming the first to ship an airframe by commercial air cargo.

BEIRUT CONTAINER TERMINAL RE-OPENS

The container terminal at the Port of Beirut has reopened after last Tuesday’s explosion, according to reports. The re-opening follows a week of vessels diverting to other regional ports – mainly Tripoli – as a result of the explosion that destroyed much of the port and surrounding area.

At least one container vessel has already called the terminal, with others scheduled to follow this week.

COMPASS AND ALG COMPLETE MULTIMODAL HELICOPTER MOVEMENT FROM GERMANY TO TEXAS

The Aerospace Logistics Group (ALG) completed the door-to-door movement of an Airbus EC 135 helicopter from Munich, Germany to Plantersville, TX in July – marking yet another successful airframe movement for the network.

ALG members Talkcargo, Compass Forwarding, and Quick Cargo Service (QCS) collaborated on the project, providing end-to-end white-glove support. The network tailored a unique routing for the shipment to balance the client’s budgetary needs with a strict deadline. This involved a containerized ocean freight solution using a rapid-transit sailing from Bremerhaven to New York, with a dedicated specialized truck from New York to Texas. The group also managed all customs clearance formalities in the United States to ensure timely processing.

The ALG is a network of specialty aerospace logistics companies providing around-the-clock services to the aerospace industry in over 50 countries worldwide.
