The world’s top 20 ports are among the busiest container hubs globally, ranked by container throughput measured in TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). The Port of Shanghai remains the world’s busiest container port, handling more than 50 million TEUs annually and maintaining the number one position since 2010. The earliest arrival of peak season in history occurred in 2026. Typically, U.S. importers book increases in summer, carriers ration available capacity, freight costs rise, and the market becomes its busiest (or "peak") from late summer through early fall. In 2026, the typical summer increase was accelerated due to increased uncertainty surrounding international trade and the fear of tariffs. Rather than waiting for the late summer/early fall rush, many importers moved up their shipment several months prior to avoid potential tariffs. As a result, freight forwarders experienced strong demand for bookings, tight space, increasing freight rates, and the need for multiple carrier capacity adjustments beginning in May and June. Global container trade has historically relied heavily on consumer goods. As global economies grew over the last 35 years, consumer demand was one of the main drivers behind the growing need for containers and ships.

At the same time, while tangible goods were moving around the world, many of the largest financial investments were going into intangible businesses — mainly software. We saw companies like Facebook, Airbnb and Uber emerge and grow into some of the world's largest companies without requiring major physical infrastructure.

This surprised me a lot as the area seemed to be an expensive area. The people living inside these containers looked like students. After doing some basic research, I discovered that this was the idea of a brilliant start-up founder -where he saw the need for higher education students needing accommodations and he came up with the idea of using containers as a cheap solution."
