CK Hutchison will not sign a deal as scheduled to sell its port operations near the Panama Canal to a U.S. investor and Swedish shipping line.
The Hong Kong conglomerate (OTC: CKHUF) controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing on March 4 announced an agreement to sell control of its Hutchison Port Holdings marine terminals outside China to a consortium of BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) and TiL, the terminals arm of Geneva-based shipping firm MSC, for $23 billion. The announcement set an April 2 deadline to finalize the transaction.
The sale, which includes terminal operations at the ports of Balboa and Cristobal in Panama, followed public pressure from President Donald Trump, who has said the U.S. should retake control of the Panama Canal.
But published reports, citing weeks of public opposition to the sale by Chinaโ€™s government, indicate that the parties wonโ€™t sign off as scheduled.
The agreement has not been scrapped, according to reports in the South China Morning Post and Reuters.
Earlier, Chinese authorities warned away state-owned firms from any new deals connected to Li and his family, Bloomberg reported.

Online retailers can make it easier for customers to return unwanted merchandise through a modified program from FedEx that doesnโ€™t require a label or box.
The service represents the latest response to shoppersโ€™ expectations for flexible, convenient returns options as e-commerce continues to grow. UPS introduced a frictionless returns capability a year ago with the acquisition of Happy Returns.
The latest survey data shows return policies significantly influence shopping decisions. UPS (NYSE: UPS) and the National Retail Federation in December estimated that the total value of returns in 2024 was $890 billion. Retailers estimated that 16.9% of their annual sales would be returned.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX) on Tuesday said FedEx Easy Returns allows e-commerce merchants to offer customers a hassle-free, low-cost returns solution, starting this summer with about 3,000 drop-off locations at FedEx Office and Kohlโ€™s stores locations. The service, which is supported by supply chain management software from Blue Yonder, will also help streamline the returns process for merchants. Returns will be routed through a reverse logistics facility for recovery and consolidation, helping merchants ensure the accuracy and speed of the return, saving materials and space.
Easy Returns builds on a no-box, no-label consolidated returns service launched more than two years ago. Merchants who use Easy Returns exchange speed for cost because Easy Returns combines customer returns into one shipment. With other FedEx return solutions, each package ships individually. Other differences are the addition of Kohlโ€™s stores as drop-off locations, the use of Blue Yonder instead of home-grown technology as the information backbone, and a lower price point, according to a FedEx spokesperson.
Consumers will be able to return items weighing less than 10 pounds without needing to print labels or use packaging, according to a company announcement. Instead, they will use a QR code to confirm their order. Plans call for fast expansion nationwide.
The integrated logistics and parcel delivery company said the service will be ideal for apparel, accessories and soft goods that fit in a poly bag.

Shippers will need a minimum average return volume of about 10 pieces per day to qualify for FedEx Easy Returns. The product is most suitable for merchants with about 3,000 returns per year or higher, the company said.
Offering merchants a good returns option is a way for FedEx and UPS to stand out from competitors because e-commerce delivery alone is a commoditized product, with many regional couriers like SpeedX, LaserShip and OnTrac able to provide two-day service to major metropolitan areas, said e-commerce consultant Derek Lossing.
The NRF and UPS report said 76% of consumers consider free returns a key factor in deciding where to shop and 67% said a negative return experience would discourage them from shopping with a retailer again. Eighty-four percent of consumers report being more likely to shop with a retailer that offers no-box/no-label returns and immediate refunds.
A January survey by Morning Consult, underwritten by FedEx, showed consumers have diverging preferences for returning online purchases based on income and generation. Two-thirds of higher-income earners and nearly 60% of baby boomers favor returning items in-store, while 20% of Gen Z and millennials opt for home pickup, with 19% of millennials also choosing mailbox drop-offs.
Opinions on the current ease of returns are split. While 51% of consumers believe returns have improved, 32% are neutral, and 17% think the process has become more challenging, according to the survey of 2,200 U.S. consumers and 1,000 businesses. Millennials and high-income groups are the most optimistic, while Gen X, Gen Z and lower-income consumers express skepticism.
Two-thirds of respondents said they consider return policies before making a purchase. Nearly 30% of respondents said return policies directly impact whether they complete a transaction, emphasizing how transparent and flexible options can build customer loyalty and drive sales.
Rival UPS acquired software and reverse logistics firm Happy Returns from PayPal in late 2023. Consumers can drop off returned goods at nearly 8,000 locations, including about 5,200 UPS Store locations.
FedEx has existing reverse logistics capabilities, including transportation, label creation and technology, designed to simplify the returns experience.
FedEx Easy Returns and UPS Happy Returns are more environmentally sustainable options for merchants that help reduce the amount of packaging and product waste by using a consolidated returns process.

The global pharmaceutical industry is expected to reach a valuation of $5.3 billion by 2032. The current valuation is $2.6 billion, as of 2024. This includes everything from raw materials and active ingredients to finished products and medical devices from manufacturers to distributors, wholesalers, pharmacies and health care facilities.
IAG cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group, recently reported a 22% increase in tonnage in 2024 versus 2022, which signals anticipated growth in demand for temperature-sensitive airfreight in the pharmaceutical industry.
Jordan Kohlbeck, head of pharmaceutical at IAG Cargo, said in an American Journal of Transportation article: โ€œThe safe, controlled movement of pharmaceuticals is more important than ever due to increasing global demand, medical advances, regulatory requirements and the undeniable need for rapid response to medical crises. As the industry continues to grow, ensuring life-saving medicines and treatments reach patients in optimal condition will become even more important.โ€

๐“๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐œ๐ค๐ฌ
The pharmaceutical industry and the cold chain go hand in hand. However, in more remote parts of the world, difficulty ensuring the reliability of the cold chain can put pharmaceuticals at risk. Vaccine storage in such regions has long been a struggle as power outages, fuel shortages and other issues can ruin vaccines before children receive them. Some progress is being made with vaccines and applications that donโ€™t require temperature-controlled transportation, but there is still a long way to go.
This need for reliability has spurred innovation in solar-powered fridges and freezers, originally created in the 1980s. This technology has become such a valuable resource for the country of Malawi that it has since replaced all of its gas- and battery-powered fridges with solar-powered ones. This swap has increased the nationโ€™s pharmaceutical cold chain locations to 1,200, meaning people donโ€™t have to travel as far for the care they need.
In a Gates Foundation article, Gray Phiri, a cold chain manager in Malawi, said, โ€œEven in places with grid power, we realized we should also be thinking about having solar fridges at those facilities.โ€ The article noted, โ€œToday, all 29 of the countryโ€™s district-level vaccine storage facilities use solar-powered units, with electricity available as backup.โ€ Roughly 60% of Malawiโ€™s cold chain locations are now supported by solar-powered fridges funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

As if the freezer aisle couldnโ€™t get any cooler, Little Debbie comes along and says, but wait thereโ€™s more. Notable in the freezer section is the companyโ€™s partnership with Hudsonville Creamery that produces Little Debbie ice cream pints, in iconic flavors of time-honored classics like Zebra Cakes, Star Crunch and Cosmic Brownies.
Now Little Debbie has moved into the ever-popular ice cream bar market. Again teaming with Hudsonville, the brand has brought back four ice cream bar flavors in time for summer: Birthday Cake, Strawberry Shortcake Rolls, Nutty Bars and Star Crunch.
The ice cream bar market was valued at $6.35 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $10.58 billion by 2033. Itโ€™s one of the fastest-growing markets in the frozen dessert sector. Popsicles still have over 60% of market share, but ice cream bars are rapidly taking a bite out of that.

This weekโ€™s market under a microscope is a broader look at Iowa, made up of three relatively small markets: Des Moines, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. While these markets might not be the largest, they have held the top spots for re**er outbound tender rejections pretty much since the beginning of the year. Re**er outbound tender rejection rates consistently above 20% indicate some inflationary spot rates in the market.
Re**er outbound tender rejections in Des Moines have fallen 246 basis points week over week, whereas Dubuque and Cedar Rapids have seen increases of 114 basis points and 2,446 basis points, respectively, in the same time period.
While re**er rejections remain elevated, the impact is not as significant as if, for example, it were Atlanta, with an average of 20% rejections. That would hamper such a large market, drastically affecting supply and capacity compared with when a smaller market is elevated.
