🚧 TUNNEL OPENED – 2:45 p.m. 🚧
Following last night's incident in the Allegheny Tunnel, the bidirectional traffic pattern has been removed, and the westbound tunnel has officially reopened to traffic.
Thank you to our customers for your patience and understanding as we worked to restore normal tunnel operations. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our maintenance, engineering, and facilities teams and emergency responders for their quick response, dedication, and hard work throughout the incident.
🚧 TRAFFIC ADVISORY – Noon 🚧
The eastbound lanes of the Allegheny Tunnel remain open to bidirectional traffic. The westbound lane remains closed for inspection, lighting replacement, and cleanup and debris removal. Customers should expect backlogs and are strongly encouraged to find an alternate route to avoid delays.
3:20 a.m.: The roadway reopened. At this time, the westbound tunnel remains closed for inspection, with the eastbound tunnel open to bidirectional traffic.
12:10 am: Westbound traffic is now moving, U-turning at the tunnel to travel back eastbound.
11:50 pm: Emergency equipment and charter buses have arrived at the tunnel for those who were evacuated. Once the buses leave, eastbound traffic that is stopped westbound will be U-turned.
EMERGENCY ALERT: The PA Turnpike (I-76) between Breezewood Exit #161 and New Stanton Exit #75 is currently closed in both directions due to an incident at the Allegheny Tunnel.
A vehicle fire occurred inside the tunnel, and customers were evacuated. Emergency responders and PA Turnpike personnel are on scene actively managing the incident. Personnel are working to get vehicles in the impacted area off the roadway.
Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes. Check detour options in the first comment.
