For three generations the Lindkist family has built boats in Karleby, a town in the heart of the Swedish-speaking coastal region of western Finland.

Linex Oy was founded by Sivert Lindkvist in the 1920s to meet the needs and demands of the local fishing communities along the coast, which supported a key industry in the recently independent Finnish Republic. Over the years, the reliability and dependability of the boats in the face of tough weather spread across the archipelagos. Joined by his sons, Sivert soon came to expand the production lin

As the years went on, Linex expanded and began to develop faster boats, able to either sustain or out run storms, if necessary. Today’s 6-model line is a testament to its Finnish-Swedish heritage and the company’s strong commitment to fast, dependable, and pragmatic solutions to a diverse range of boating needs. In addition to enjoying wide popularity in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, the popular boats can be found in places as far as Greenland and Japan. Nord Star boats are now available for purchase in the United States. Nord Star USA’s operations are headed by John Uljens, who is himself the descendant of Swedish Finnish migrants to New England from Baltic coastal communities. During the close of the 19th Century and the early part of the 20th Century, many such immigrants and entire communities relocated to the coastal towns along the Northeast, bringing with them the expertise and technical skills of the Scandinavian archipelagos. The ecological similarity between the Gulf of Bothnia and areas such as the Pacific Northwest, coastal New England, and the Upper Peninsula not only attracted large Swedish and Finnish populations, but also explain the appeal these safe, affordable, all-weather vessels might have in these regions.
