Baby steps, but progress all the same ❤️‍🩹

"Edgar" has been here for several days now and is settling in nicely. He will take hay from my hands, but isn't quite ready to let me pet him.

We have started referring to him as "Edgar Allen Poe" as a joke and today we all had a good laugh when we found him talking to a friend!

It didn't take long for word to get out that my gentling pen is back up and operational 😂

Yesterday we welcomed this handsome mustang gelding in partnership with Days End Farm Horse Rescue. He is tall, he is calm, and he is absolutely stunning with a kind eye and perfect Roman nose. He will be available for adoption once his gentling process has been completed so make sure you have an application on file with Days End!

It's almost Friday, y'all! 🙌Let's see some tongue out Thursday pictures! 😝

‼️ Still ISO ‼️

My client is still in search of a step up large pony or small horse for her 10yo daughter. This is what we are looking for and we will not stray from these parameters:

Age: between 8 and 15
Gender: unimportant, but must turn out with a mare
Breed: unimportant
Color: unimportant
Size: between 14.2 and 15.2hh

Safety is the top priority. We are not looking for a total deadhead, but mentally unstable horses with quirks that will give this poor mama a heart attack need not apply. Fancy buttons are not necessary, but a solid w/t/c and a soft mouth are. We are not looking for show quality or fancy broke. We are looking for sound, safe, and sane. Some maintenance considered so long as it is fully disclosed.
This horse or pony will want for nothing and will live an easy life on a private farm with an older pony mare and mini donkey. Candidates will need to trailer well since the daughter hauls out to weekly lessons. The daughter enjoys western 4H shows and all around riding. Horses with "potential to be kid safe" will not be considered. We are looking for proven kids mounts. This is a perfect job for something that has sadly been outgrown by a teenager, but isn't ready to retire!

Budget is mid 4s for the perfect horse or pony. We will not buy sight unseen so all applicants must be in York Co, Adams Co, Harford Co, Baltimore Co, or potentially Lancaster and Cecil Cos.

Thank you in advance!

I love watching the transformation of thoroughbreds when they come off the track.

Postcode Envy (JC Ditch the Loot) is a 4yo OTTB mare that last raced in December. She came to me a little over a month ago and has already made drastic improvements in her body condition.

Keep your eye out for this mare! She is as sweet as candy and will be available in the next few weeks!

Did you know I can teach the basics of liberty?

I am by no means a professional in the art of liberty. There are other trainers who far exceed my skill level in this style of horsemanship. It is something I simply never chose to fully pursue, but the basics are part of my tool belt.

Liberty is a technique I reserve for special cases. Often I will use liberty as a way to bring shut down horses out of their shells because it gives horses a bit more freedom to express themselves.

What does that mean?

Of course horses in my program are always free to (safely) express themselves whether a training rope is attached to their halter or not. I believe horses are individuals just like humans and should be allowed certain freedoms to simply be themselves so long as they are not endangering themselves or others. Some horses though, particularly abuse cases, will not allow themselves that freedom.

When I remove the rope from my hands, it creates an opening for me to meet that horse in a more natural state. Horses communicate with each other mainly through body language with some vocal cues sprinkled in as necessary. With no physical contact, body language and voice cues are all I have to direct that horse.

A raised hand to point in the direction I want them to go. My body rigid and squared up to keep them farther away from me. My body slumped and withdrawing to bring them back in. A gentle cluck of the tongue to bring their attention back to me.

These are all cues that form a line of communication with a horse in the place of a training rope. Some horses, like Benny in the video below, respond very well to this type of training.

So, what do I look for in a horse that tells me they would benefit from liberty?

Any horse can benefit from liberty and it is a great way to connect with your horse on a different level. I personally choose not to delve deeply into liberty; I appreciate it as a true art and highly respect trainers who specialize in it. It just isn't my cup of tea for everyday usage. That being said, these are the signs I look for in a horse when I choose to work with them at liberty:

💜 Overly sensitive to pressure/cues
🩵 Shut down or struggling to connect
💜 An ability to hyper focus on handlers
🩵 A willingness to connect, even if it is initially buried under fear

This video was Benny's first session at liberty. It was being done in an open arena--he was free to walk away from me at any time, which he did once or twice. He was able to connect right back to me though and he showed an eagerness to continue engaging. I am excited to see how he will progress over his next few sessions!

I have over 2,000 followers so I am hoping at least some of you can help make an impact!

Destani Langford is one of my employees who also has her own equine assisted therapy programs not far from my farm. In the short time she has worked for me, Destani has become a valued employee for her hard work and her kind, gentle nature that shines through even on the coldest, rainiest days. Horses and humans alike adore her, and now she needs our help.

Destani has applied for an entrepreneur sponsorship that would greatly improve her program so she can continue helping those in need. Several of her students have been to my farm to help out and the impact Destani has had on those young girls was abundantly clear. She also helps those with physical and mental challenges while simultaneously bringing healing to the horses who assist in her program. I cannot think of anyone else who deserves this sponsorship more than Destani.

So, how can we help?

For starters, vote! Facebook has been hindering the link, but I have placed it in the comments of this post! ‼️Please note that Facebook continues to mark the link as spam (even though it isn't) so you will need to REMOVE THE SPACES that I placed in the link after you copy it ‼️You can vote every day! Then, you can share this post far and wide. I have an international following, so let's put it to good use and help someone who has dedicated her life to helping others!

Thank you everyone and good luck, Destani! We are rooting for you!

I often find myself yawning during my sessions with Benny, and it's not because I am bored 🥱

Quite the contrary, actually. Benny is one of my favorite horses to work with. He challenges me to think outside the box for ways to engage with him and earn his trust. Benny was pulled from auction last year with some very, very deeply rooted issues which is why he ended up here with me.

What I love most about working with Benny though is that his sessions force me to slowwwwwww down.

Anyone who has worked with horses professionally or even semi professionally knows it is a fast paced environment. Go, go, go on to the next thing all 👏 the 👏 time 👏. There is always more to do, never enough time to do it in, and deadlines are never fair. When you train horses, there is a very fine line between efficiency and effectiveness. But that's a whole different discussion for another time.

Fast paced doesn't fly with Benny. Benny practically lives life in slow motion as he learns to navigate the world without fear. When I work with Benny, he requires me to slow down everything.

My breathing.
My movements.
My mind.
My emotions.

Everything must be slowed down. Benny is incredibly sensitive to a person's energy. If you approach him with any kind of turmoil even in the back of your mind, he can feel it and he will tattle on you right away.

You should always leave your emotions at the gate when you work with horses, but we are all only human. Sometimes the best we can do is hide our emotions under a couple layers. That doesn't cut it with Benny.

Benny requires me to regulate everything about myself in order to have a successful session. I'm sure my fellow trainers can relate to how difficult that can be sometimes.

Benny will reflect everything that I am thinking and feeling. I find myself yawning because his sessions help me to gain total control and awareness of myself and return to stasis--a state of total calm.

If you don't have a Benny in your life, I highly recommend you get one. It's better than therapy (don't tell my therapist I said that 😉)

Many of you will remember my post a few weeks ago about the 7 mustangs from the Annville event that ended up at New Holland just days after being purchased. Many people were moved by the swift action taken by the mustang community and the BLM who stepped in, voided the sale, and took the 7 mustangs back.

One of them, tag #0486, tugged at the heartstrings of my long time friend, Shirley, who ended up adopting her and bringing her here to FUT. Sadly, sometime between the sale and New Holland, #0486's neck tag was cut off and Shirley was not able to experience the monumental moment of removing her mustang's tag. For those not familiar, removing the neck tag is a rite of passage in the mustang community; it signifies the moment when a mustang transforms from just a number in government holding to a horse with a name and a future.

We adapt and overcome though. Instead of removing a neck tag, we placed a halter.

Please help me welcome 🔥Kindle🔥 to the Face Up family! I see bright things ahead for Shirley and Kindle. So far she has proven to be a very intelligent and inquisitive mare with a sweet and curious nature. This mare is something special!
