🚨 Scammers Alert 🚨

⚠️ SCAM ALERT: The New Braunfels Police Department is warning the public about scammers pretending to be law enforcement. Victims are contacted by phone (sometimes from a number that appears local) and told they must send money via gift cards. THIS IS A SCAM.

No legitimate law enforcement agency will ever demand payment over the phone, and they will never use gift cards, Bitcoin, or retail kiosks to take payment. Law enforcement also cannot detain you by telephone. Always be cautious about giving out any personal information over the phone, especially when the call is unsolicited.

Remember, scammers often target older adults...but ANYONE can be a victim.

If you get a call like this, hang up immediately, do not share your personal information, and report it to the NBPD’s non-emergency line at (830) 221-4100.

🔗 Visit the FBI’s Common Fraud Schemes website at https://www.fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes for more tips on avoiding scams.

🚨 BEWARE 🚨

‼️There are warnings out tonight about a scam circulating involving Amazon.

Multiple residents in our community have reported receiving these postcards offering free gifts or cash rewards.

How the Postcard Scam Works:

📍The Bait: You receive a physical postcard featuring the Amazon logo claiming you were selected for a VIP club, product testing, or review program, offering a $20 to $40 reward or free items.

📍The QR Code Trap: The card asks you to scan a QR code to complete a survey or claim your prize. This sends you to a fake website designed to steal your login details or download malware.

📍The Review/Refund Trick: Some versions ask you to buy a third-party item and send confirmation to a private email address for a cash refund. The scammers take your money and disappear.

How to Protect Yourself

📍Do not scan: Never scan QR codes or visit website URLs found on unsolicited mail. Check your account: Legitimate messages from Amazon will always appear in your official message center under Account > Your Messages.

📍Report the fraud: Forward details or photos of the mail to [email protected] or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission.
