We are thrilled to announce a soft opening tomorrow (Saturday, October 10th) for our highly anticipated new children's playground and brand-new pickleball courts! 🏓🧸

While we continue putting the final, polished touches on the entire complex ahead of our official grand opening, we want to invite our community to come out and be among the first to experience these fantastic new amenities.

Whether you're looking to let the kids burn off some energy on the modern playground equipment or grab your paddle to test out the pristine pickleball courts, there is something for the whole family to enjoy right behind Buhlow Lake. ☀️

The Staff of the Red River Waterway Commission thoroughly enjoyed hosting Twin Blends: Northwest Louisiana History Hunters and Red River Steamboats, LLC. We appreciate the fascinating presentation and interesting conversations about the history of steamboats on the Red River. These gentlemen are doing some great work on the rich history of the Red River and the area. Looking forward to seeing more of their research and findings.

Beginning tomorrow (Monday), our contractor will start the demolition of the dock adjoining the boat ramp. Please note that the boat ramp will remain open during this time. However, there will be active construction work and machinery in the area.

Louisiana isn't exactly famous for dramatic overlooks.

But just outside Natchitoches, there's a bluff high above the Red River that may surprise you.

This is Grand Ecore.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Grand Ecore Visitor Center sits on a bluff approximately 80 feet above the Red River, providing a sweeping view across the water and surrounding landscape.

And this isn't just a pretty overlook.

Grand Ecore has layers of Louisiana history.

The area was strategically important during the Civil War, particularly during the 1864 Red River Campaign, when Union and Confederate forces fought across this part of Louisiana.

Today, exhibits at the visitor center interpret subjects including the Red River, regional history, geology, paleontology, Native American cultures and the area's Civil War history.

The modern Red River is also very different from the difficult waterway earlier generations encountered.

A system of five locks and dams completed in 1994 created the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway, allowing year-round navigation along this portion of the river.

Grand Ecore remains an active recreation area as well. The Red River Waterway Commission lists boat-launch and picnic facilities here, and improvements have continued in recent years.

But that view is what gets you.

For a state people constantly joke is completely flat, standing 80 feet above the Red River feels almost rebellious.

Louisiana apparently forgot to tell Grand Ecore that we're not supposed to have overlooks.
