Taking a vacation in November right in the middle of health insurance open enrollment is a new concept for me. No stress. No files. No phone calls. I can get used to this! Palm Springs, California, was the best place to go in November to relax. It was hot and dry. Being a native Tennessean, desert sand and barren mountains are different for me but just as beautiful in their own way. It was a fabulous week. The Lord blessed us with easy flights during a government shutdown and a Christian radio station on our rental car when we picked it up!

To end our trip to Central Europe, we added on a side trip to Paris. We had been there in the late 1980's so it was time to go back. It was also my birthday! From Paris, we fly back to New York via Dublin. It was a wonderful trip.

Traveling in the shoulder months is always tricky. We got lucky with the weather in Austin, TX. It was cool in the morning (sunrise was not until 7:45 am) and hot in the afternoon. One afternoon by the pool it was 92 degrees. We did some sightseeing in Austin such as the stunning state capitol building and a sunset cruise under the Congress Street bridge to watch the bats emerge. We were planning to stay in Austin four nights and then board Amtrak's Texas Eagle at the Austin station on Saturday evening. Two nights on the train and we would arrive in Los Angeles on Monday and fly home to Nashville. Unfortunately, the Texas Eagle was delayed multiple times in Missouri due to downed trees due to storms. After anxious moments, we finally decided to cancel our train for a refund of our points. We got a cheap but really nice hotel near the Austin airport and changed our LAX flight to Austin which costed us a tidy extra amount of cash.
We have learned you have to be flexible when you travel. Take it as it comes good and bad. We had used points for our resort and for part of our flight so, all in all, it all balanced out. We enjoyed our time together and some much needed relaxation.
Stay tuned -- I am determined to finish our Amtrak circuit! Happy Travels!

Second part of vacation was supposed to have been an Amtrak route starting in Chicago, through Texas to Los Angeles. Amtrak was doing track work in TX which would mean a long bus ride around that area. We cancelled it and decided to take Amtrak from Portland, ME, to Boston, MA, to stay a couple of days. Then we took Amtrak's fast Acela train from Boston to Philadelphia, PA, to stay a couple of days. We had been to Boston about 2019 but we hadn't been to Philly since the 1990's. The only rainy day of our trip was our transfer day from North Conway to Portland, ME. We had scheduled a boat tour of the bay which was quite soggy.

Jerry has always wanted to go to New England during the summer to get away from the heat here in Tennessee. We flew to Portland, Maine, and drove over to North Conway, New Hampshire, to stay a week using up some RCI points. We thought North Conway was just a ski resort but they also get a lot of visitors during the summer months. We were there at the tail end of what they call "Mud" season when the ground thaws and spring arrives. The tiny iris were blooming, peonies bloomed the week we were there and our rental car was covered in pollen. Luckily, I had taken a few Zyrtec and some Mucinex! Here are some photos from our week in North Conway. Yes, there is a smaller Conway and an even smaller Center Conway. Must have run out of names.

I hope you are still enjoying our travel pictures as much as I am enjoying showing them. Ha Ha. This day we did a driving tour of Dublin and visited Trinity College before heading to Galway. The first day in England, we were at the front of the bus on the left. The first day in Ireland, we were in the first seat on the right. Funny.

Something we did not consider about a bus tour is the pace. There is no time to rest or be lazy. You are on the go from sun up to sun down. By the end of the first week, the pace was wearing me down. We had learned from our long train trip in March to expect to hit a wall about day 8. Our last day in England was a walking tour of Cambridge before heading back to London for the night. That was a hard day for me. On Sunday before our flight to Dublin, I had a chance to spend a little me time to get myself reset for a new country, Ireland.

After two nights in Edinburgh, Scotland, we crossed the border back into England. Scotland, England and Wales make up Great Britain and use pounds for their currency. Crossing the border from Scotland to England is like crossing into another state here. Back in England, we visited the old town of York and then on to the more modern Leeds before stopping for the night.
