On this Tidbit Tuesday we will discuss the importance of a VHF radio. Whether you operate a 110’ yacht or a 16’ flats boat, it’s critical to own a mounted or handheld VHF. There are many locations throughout the Florida waterways (both inshore and offshore) that have very spotty or weak cell reception. If you are ever in a time of need without the use of your phone, having a VHF can be a significant and lifesaving factor. Become familiar with the common channels below as it is critical knowledge to have as a boater.
• Channel 6 - Intership safety communications only.
• Channel 9 - Communications between vessels (commercial and recreational) and ship to coast.
• Channel 13 - Strictly for navigation purposes by vessels at bridges, locks, and harbors.
• Channel 16 - Distress and safety calls to USCG and others, and to initiate calls to other vessels.
• Channel 22 - USCG broadcasts of severe weather warnings and other safety warnings.
• Channels 24-28 - Public calls (to marine operator).
• Channels 68, 69, and 71 - Recreational vessel radio channels and ship to coast.
As we’ve also discussed in the past, it is very important to monitor the weather for developments. If you’re out of cell range, the below frequencies broadcast NOAA weather reports:
• 162.400 MHz
• 162.425 MHz
• 162.450 MHz
• 162.475 MHz
• 162.500 MHz
• 162.525 MHz
• 162.550 MHz

Greetings Everyone!

We, in Naples, are at the peak of our season. The sun is shining, the weather is perfect (most days) and the breeze is flowing. On this same token, this is the time of year we are mostly affected by higher winds. Before we head out on any trips, we are sure to check our wind finding apps to see how it may affect our travels. Be sure to prep correctly by looking into the forecast, not only for the chance of rain but also wind. Even a slight change in speed or direction of the wind could adversely affect your boating conditions.

An, unfortunate, hiccup in the plan. Mother Nature took a drastic turn and was not on our side for the return trip from Marsh Harbour. As we checked weather reports, the Gulf Stream called for 7-9’ swells with the occasional 11’ from Wednesday until Monday of next week. This left no window to return within a safe amount of time. We would have been able to cross the Gulf Stream, as planned, very early Monday morning, but would not have been able to return.

With the limited amount of fuel and supplies, it would have been nearly impossible for the crew to make it through the week. Let alone, a very bumpy ride back for the crew plus rescued furry friends on board.

The crew is set to return home today to regroup and plan another trip. As long as the weather is favorable, we plan to depart 9/25 for the next mission. We will be closely monitoring the weather over the next week and will keep everyone updated as we progress.
