5 Ways that Brokers Guide Freight Strategy

1. Brokers provide guidance in shipping the product. Bulk freight brokers who have experience with the product you are shipping are indispensable assets in helping the shipper make sure the load is shipped correctly and safely.
2. Brokers provide capacity. Some brokers, have networks consisting of hundreds of freight carriers. These carriers have been fully vetted, and insurance and other key documentation is available on-demand.
3. Brokers provide guidance in delivering the product. The broker will guide the shipper through the process until final delivery. This includes the coordination and confirmation of all details
4. Brokers provide emergency support. A good freight broker values its relationships and can be a partner to its shipping customers. This can sometimes mean helping shippers through emergency freight situations. Many freight brokers will devote as many resources as necessary to help a shipper out of a bind.
5. Brokers provide support for carriers. Brokers connect carriers with shipping customers and help them secure loads. This is beneficial for providers that have reliable capacity but don’t yet have a name in the marketplace.

What is the difference between a Freight Broker and a Freight Broker Agent?

For the most part the difference between a Freight Broker and a Freight Agent is a Freight Agent is an individual that functions as an independent contractor under a Freight Broker’s operating license to move freight for its customers, while the Freight Broker moves freight under its own FMCSA operating authority.

A Freight Agent is a lot like a sales agent, but they bring with themselves the reputation of the freight broker they are representing.

Freight Agents are typically small businesses that operate out of their homes, while a Freight Broker is most often a much larger entity.

Agents don’t need to hold surety or insurance; they don’t take on the liability for the work they do. Agents do the matching and negotiating and earn a living by taking a commission, or a percentage of the broker’s earnings.

While there will be some similarity in the services offered by a Freight Broker and a Freight Agent there are cultural differences because the Freight Agent is, like mentioned before, an independent contractor and has their own culture.

For either career, you are not required to have specialized training or education, but brokers do have to be licensed and insured. For both, it does benefit you to learn before you start working.

Filing Taxes as a Freight Agent

Tax Season is here, and agents always have questions about their tax obligations. As a 1099 freight agent, taxes are not withheld. You will need to pay taxes on the income you earn. You will be expected to file yourself, but generally there is help available.

If you file your own taxes, be certain you claim all deductions available to you as a small business owner. There are plenty of web-based tax preparation software programs that can help with your taxes. Depending on how you’re doing business (sole proprietor or LLC), check to be certain you’re filing the correct way and using the correct forms.

If you need personal assistance, check to see if help is available to the public in your community. It’s not uncommon for libraries, public colleges, or other organizations to provide free tax advice.

If someone else is doing your taxes for you, the IRS recommends you self-check to be certain you truly trust this individual.

Taxes might seem more complicated for those who are self-employed, including independent freight agents. Yet, like your career as an agent, you have more control over your finances and your tax benefits as opposed to being locked in a W2 situation in which the company reaps the benefits. With some record-keeping and guidance from a tax professional, you can establish a process that ensures you meet your obligations while maximizing your deductions and savings.

What is the purpose of the FMCSA?

FMCSA stands for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The primary mission of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.

This agency monitors the trucking carriers, enforcing the safety rules and regulations. They develop the standards for testing and licensing Commercial Motor Vehicle drivers. FMCSA creates and enforces road safety rules for truck drivers across the U.S. FMCSA targets educational messages to carriers, commercial drivers, and the public. FMCSA harnesses safety information systems to focus on higher risk carriers in enforcing the safety regulations and partners with stakeholders including Federal, State, and local enforcement agencies, the motor carrier industry, safety groups, and organized labor on efforts to reduce bus and truck-related crashes.

The FMCSA has a very wide reach over motor carriers. It regulates approximately 521,000 freight motor carriers, 13,000 passenger carriers, 17,000 intrastate-only hazardous materials carriers, and approximately 4 million active CDL holders. With such a large reach, the FMCSA’s work is essential to crash prevention. It estimates that it prevents roughly 15,000 crashes per year, because of these programs. This saves roughly 500 lives a year.

Let’s talk about Mindset.

A positive mind set, and a little patience can make or break you as a Freight Broker.

As I’m sure you all know and have heard repeatedly, your mind is a very powerful thing. I am a firm believer that this is true. The power of positivity is real, and I notice when I start to fill my own mind with positive thoughts and I’m able to redirect the negative ones, my entire reality changes. Doors open, things coincidentally start working out and I feel lighter overall. Mindset is going to be one of your strongest tools when it comes to being a Freight Broker.

There’s no easy way and no short cuts to establishing yourself as a Freight Broker. You must put in the time and effort. This job can sometimes become very repetitive, it can get hard to stay dedicated to what you’re doing. A standard job may seem easier when you’ve just been rejected for the fiftieth time today while cold calling. Obstacles will come up mid-shipment that make you want take professionality off the table completely. After weeks without a load and no leads, you’re going to want to throw in the towel. It’s all a part of the process.

Personally, I’ve had experiences where my mind got in the way before anything even happened, mostly due to fear. My mind tends to do everything it can to stop me in attempt to protect me from pain, and what I’m saying sounds negative right now but hear me out! My brain naturally does these things, its conditioning and programming that I recently came to realize I AM IN CONTROL of. Wait, hold on— Did you see where I typed, I’m in control? Interesting concept! I can make a conscious choice to ignore the defense mechanisms that are no longer serving me. I can also retrain my mind to be positive and business oriented if that’s what I desire.

Now I can’t sit here and tell you its an easy on and off switch with an overnight turn around rate, it’s going to take time, consistency, and honestly sacrifice. I say sacrifice because we get attached to our own negativity, it becomes our comfort zone. The problem with that is growth is not found within the barriers of our comfort zone.

You must purge your life of the negative and find a way to start surrounding yourself with as many sources of positivity that you can find. When you set your intention watch how fast these things start showing up for you without effort. Distance yourself as much as you can from negativity. This includes people, places, and things.

Write down daily affirmations, read them aloud to yourself repeatedly multiple times throughout the day. With time your reality will turn into those affirmations, trust the process.

Visualization is another powerful way to manifest your ideal work situation, visualize what it looks like and channel the emotions that come along with your visualization.

Surround yourself with like-minded people, business-oriented people, and successful people because as motivational speaker Jim Rhon said, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”.

Make sure to re-affirm your motives every single day. Remember these motives when things get hard and you’re losing confidence. This all may sound like a lot, but you get what you work for and its quite simple to set your daily routine up to incorporate these things.

Be kind to your mind!

How to Organize Your Day Efficiently as a Freight Broker Agent.

The daily tasks that a Freight Broker Agent must manage are endless. Agents are responsible for prospecting, cold calling, checking load boards, booking trucks, various status updates and the list goes on, in this post I would like to help you to organize your day efficiently so that this long to do list doesn’t get overwhelming.

The key to a successful day over all in my opinion is making your bed, I know this has nothing to do with Freight Broker Agents and its rather specific but trust me, setting the vibe is important. Get the good vibes flowing as soon as you wake up however that may work for you.

You can start bright and early by sitting down with a morning beverage of your choice and making an actual written to do list reflecting your tasks on this day. Lists are my tool to stay afloat at my job, there’s no way id remember everything I have to do without them. The earlier you start the easier your job will be. Identify any tasks that are important for your current shippers, carriers, and loads and add them to the top of the list as these come before anything else. After your day is nice and mapped out go ahead and go through any work-related emails and messages or voicemails, don’t forget to check your TMS as well! Send a quick text for a status update on all the loads you have from the days before. Try to identify any issues the carrier is facing as early in the day as you can so that you have plenty of time to resolve anything that needs your attention. Check to see what shippers have loads that still need to be moved, and what carriers have trucks that need to be filled. Organizing all this information into some type of spreadsheet will make your life much easier. Depending on your email set up, sending out a mass email within your network of contacts may be helpful when finding any matches for the trucks and loads that you are working with. Use your loadbaord to fill up any trucks and get loads moving.

You should probably take a break at this point, maybe have a bite to eat. Refocus yourself, spark those good vibes back up! The second half of the day is going to be a little less chaotic, you can now work at a relaxed pace.

It’s time to go ahead with your vetting and prospecting, make your cold calls, get networking, do the recruiting, whatever you do to bring in new business. Make sure you check on your carriers and the loads that were covered this morning, following up will assure that you execute your responsibility in making sure that everything goes smoothly. Refer to your spreadsheet to help you with this.

That pretty much wraps it up, but remember every person is different and the way you work is unique to your lifestyle. It is vital to try to get the most important tasks done first so that the rest of your day is smooth sailing.

At the end of your day, decompress and make sure you get a good amount of sleep because you’ll need a sharp mind to do it all over again tomorrow!

You can also almost always count on career advancement as a Freight Broker Agent.

2. Minimal Start Up Cost
The only things you need to start are a phone, internet, and a laptop or desktop.
Its literally that simple.

4. Pick Your Own Hours
You can be as flexible as you want with your hours. Set your dream schedule up! You are paid for the number of loads you move, rather than the number of hours you work.

If you’ve wondered if freight brokerage is right for your supply chain demands, but feel like you don’t quite understand the concept, this is for YOU!

I’m going to break it down for you in simple terms. A freight broker is basically the mediator between businesses with shipping requirements and transportation carriers. A freight broker's job is to organize the deal between the two and make sure they communicate to perform the freight transfer efficiently.

The reasons you may need a freight broker are reducing transportation costs and lost time, any issues with your current providers dependability or service, and even because you are doing well with your current process, but need more resources.

A reputable freight broker will have these three things in common, they will without a doubt be financially stable, they need to be licensed by the FMCSA, and they will have a productive procedure to vet, monitor, and select their partner carriers.
