The Cherokee County Sharing Center is a food pantry in Murphy, NC, serving people in all of Cherokee County. We provide food for those in need by giving them a large selection of grocery items. The food pantry is supported by volunteers and donations from local Murphy churches, businesses and individuals. We are a MANNA Foodbank Partner Agency and a Partner Agency of the United Way of Cherokee and

The Sharing Center Food Pantry received a donation of fresh locally grown produce thanks to the Donation Station program sponsored by the NC Cooperative Extension. The Donation Station uses a farmers market-based approach where volunteers collect food and monetary donations from farmers market shoppers, buy directly from farmers at the farmers market and donate the food to a local hunger relief agency. This donation is conducted once a month and the Sharing Center received close to 70 pounds of produce, eggs and baked goods from farmers at the Murphy Farmers Market on Saturday, June 15. Weighing and packing up the donations for the Sharing Center, from left, are Denise Cintino, Extension Master Food Volunteer; Megan Lambert, president, Cherokee County Food Alliance, and Marlana Baker, Donation Station Coordinator/FCS Extension Agent. Thank you!

Rural carriers with the Murphy Post Office participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 11. The carriers picked up donations from people on their various routes all over Cherokee County to help fill the pantry at the Cherokee County Sharing Center. The Sharing Center Board of Directors and Volunteers thank the carriers for their efforts in stamping out hunger. From left are Sharing Center Treasurer Jana Johnson, rural carrier Gloria Parente, Sharing Center Vice-Treasurer Judy Standish, and Sharing Center volunteer Kim Willms. The Potty Party celebrating a T-Mobile grant to install a comfort station in the distribution center and vegetable wash sink was held April 4 at the First Baptist Church's fellowship room. About 30 people attended along with representatives from T-Mobile who presented the ceremonial check. Thank you to all who worked on the party and special thanks to Karen Borchers for writing the winning grant and Cherryl Witt for her beautifully decorated commode that was our centerpiece along with toilet tissue table centerpieces. All is good. The Mountain Men have put up the walls and CJ's Plumbing is expected to begin work on April 15. The facility is much needed for our volunteers and clients.

FOOD DRIVE FOR FOOD PANTRY

Codie Burnette of Murphy recently led a food drive for the Cherokee County Sharing Center as a Beta Club community service through her church, Ranger Baptist Church. Eighteen milk boxes filled with donations were delivered to the Sharing Center on Monday, helping to fill the shelves of goods for food deprived "neighbors." The Sharing Center Board and its volunteers wish to thank Codie for her caring leadership in conducting the food drive. Pictured is Cody with boxes of food collected. Delivering the boxes is her mom, Adena Gibby, left, along with Brittney McKeon, right. Accepting the goods is Sharing Center volunteer Ray Kimball. The Sharing Center is sorely in need of monetary donations for the purchase of food for its growing number of food deprived families seeking help to feed their families in an economy of rising living costs. For information on how to donate, call 828-360-4041; or send donations to: Cherokee County Sharing Center, P.O. Box 692, Murphy, NC. 28906.

A big shout-out to the Early Act Club students at Ranger Elementary School for its recent food drive that helped fill the shelves at the food pantry for our food-deprived "neighbors." The food pantry relies on food drives to be able to offer additional items to our clients that the pantry cannot buy. Again thank you!
