Good day everyone, my name is Dave Schmidtman, new owner of Lake Superior boat Tours. I would like to explain the reason why we are not offering boat tours this summer. But first I wanted to tell you more about myself. I've lived on the shores of Lake Superior all my life, growing up on the north shore in Minnesota near Grand Marais and then moved to Munising in 1994 to purchase Hillside Party Store. We had a great time operating Hillside for 15 years before selling that business, which is still the best party store in Alger County. After boating on Lake Superior for many, many years I finally acquired my Captain's license.
My first official captains' job was working for Paddling Michigan giving narrated tours around the great Grand Island National Recreation area. After 6 seasons and over a thousand tours around the island I got an opportunity to work in Alaska!
So, in the spring of 2023 flew to Valdez, Ak. to work for Pangaea Adventures hauling kayaks and passengers to the face of the Columbia Glacier via a water taxi, all I can say is, WOW!
Orca and Humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters, waterfalls, iceberg's, ... and well to be honest just too much to mention.
Now during the second season while working in Alaska, I was working with Mark Fredrickson (who I've known for nearly 30 years) on the purchasing Lake Superior Boat Tours which was finalized in October of 2025.
So, at this point all intentions where to get back into offering specialized private tours of the majestic cliffs, waterfalls, beaches of the beautiful hidden gem, Grand Island National Recreation Area, when in the dead of winter, January ish, I received a phone call from Lake Powell resort and marinas located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation area on Lake Powell and the Colorado river wondering if I would be interested in operating boat tours of the Glen Canyon Dam, Navajo Canyon and upstream to Rainbow Bridge national Monument.
Well, I looked the area up on the internet and saw how beautiful it is and, what can I say, here I am, I could not pass up the opportunity. So, I apologize for the inconvenience of this season's unavailable tours and wish all that will be vacationing in greater Munising area a special and safe time and to all the future and repeat travelers, we will be back up and running nest season.
