The ride starts with a little bit of darkness… and a whole lot of history. 🚲✨

The St. Paul Pass Tunnel, also known as the Taft Tunnel, is one of the most iconic parts of the Route of the Hiawatha. Stretching 8,771 feet — about 1.66 miles — beneath the Bitterroot Mountains, this old Milwaukee Road railroad tunnel takes riders from Montana into Idaho before they continue down one of the most scenic rail-trails in the country.

Built in the early 1900s, the tunnel once carried trains through the rugged mountains between the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. Today, it gives bikers and hikers an unforgettable start to the Hiawatha experience: cool air, total darkness, headlamps glowing, and the feeling of riding straight through history.

Bring a light, wear a jacket, and get ready for one of the most unique trail moments in the Northwest.

Ride through history on the Route of the Hiawatha. 🌲🚲
