Carroll County Community Spotlight: Lanark, Illinois! 🧡💙

Each week, Carroll County Transit is taking a little trip through the history of the communities we are proud to serve. This week, we’re stopping in Lanark!

📜 Did you know?

Lanark’s story goes all the way back to the 1800s. The area’s first settler, David Becker, arrived in Rock Creek Township in 1844 and chose to build his home out on the open prairie, something people at the time thought was pretty risky!

The town was originally called Glasgow, but the name was later changed to Lanark, after Lanark, Scotland. The community really began taking shape with the arrival of the railroad, and Lanark was founded in 1861.

🚂 The railroad played a huge part in Lanark’s early growth. As the tracks came through, homes, stores, and businesses quickly began popping up across what had once been open prairie.

🏫 Education has long been an important part of Lanark’s story. Lanark’s first graduating high school class was in 1876, beginning a tradition of education that continues today. Lanark is now home to Eastland Junior-Senior High School and the Eastland Cougars, a name that brings plenty of Cougar pride to the community! 🧡💙🐾

Once a Cougar, always a Cougar! 🐾

📚 And here’s one of our favorite facts: In 1886, 40 Lanark residents each donated $1 to help establish a public library. Talk about a community coming together!

More than 160 years later, Lanark continues to be a community filled with history, local pride, agriculture, businesses, families, and neighbors who look out for one another.

At Carroll County Transit, we’re proud that Lanark is one of the many Carroll County communities we get to serve every day.

We don’t just travel the roads of Carroll County, we’re proud to be part of the communities and history along the way.🚎💙🧡

Do you have an old photo, favorite memory, or piece of Lanark history? Share it in the comments! We’d love to hear it. 💙🧡

Understanding Carroll County Transit: Pick-Up Times, Rural Transportation & Dispatch Hours

We want to take a moment to help educate our community about how public transportation works, especially here in a rural area like Carroll County.

Our goal every day is simple: provide safe, dependable transportation while serving as many members of our community as efficiently as possible.

Understanding Your Pick-Up Time

When you schedule a pick-up time, we always try our very best to arrive as close to that exact time as possible. However, we ask riders to allow a 15-minute window before and 15-minute window after their scheduled pick-up time.

For example, if your scheduled pick-up is 10:00 AM, your driver may arrive between 9:45 AM and 10:15 AM.

There are many things throughout the day that can affect a public transportation schedule—traffic, road construction, weather, a rider needing additional assistance, or an appointment taking longer than expected.

Rural Transportation Works a Little Differently

One thing that is important to understand is that Carroll County is a very rural area. Many of the larger hospitals, medical facilities and other services our riders need are approximately 30 minutes or more away.

Because of those distances, we try to coordinate rides whenever possible so we aren’t sending several vehicles long distances in the same direction when riders can safely and comfortably travel together.

That may occasionally mean asking you to leave a little earlier so we can accommodate another rider traveling in the same direction. We understand that arriving early isn’t always ideal, but coordinating trips this way helps us continue providing transportation to as many people in our community as possible.

Why Would My Driver Meet Another Driver?

You may also notice that sometimes Dispatch asks your driver to meet another Transit driver so you can transfer vehicles for your ride home.

There is a reason for that, too, and many times, it is actually to get you home sooner.

For example, two riders may travel to the same area for appointments. Your appointment might finish at 11:00 AM, while the other rider’s appointment unexpectedly runs until noon.

Rather than asking you to sit and wait an additional hour, Dispatch may coordinate with another driver in the area to meet your current driver and bring you home.

It may look like an extra step from the outside, but behind the scenes, our dispatchers are constantly looking at where our vehicles are, where our riders need to go, and how we can reduce unnecessary wait times while still accommodating everyone.

Dispatch & Office Hours

Our regular office hours are 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.

We have a dispatcher in the office beginning at 6:00 AM. You may leave a message as early as 6:00 AM, and someone will return your call as soon as the message is received.

Our regular phone lines turn off at 4:00 PM, but a dispatcher remains in the office until 4:30 PM and will return messages received during that time.

After-Hours Emergency Line

We also have someone available after regular office hours for transportation-related emergencies.

After-Hours Emergency Number: 815-821-3776

Please use this number for emergencies only, such as a scheduled driver not arriving, a driver being significantly late, or another urgent issue involving your scheduled transportation.

Future ride scheduling and general questions should continue to go through Dispatch during regular business hours.

There Is a Lot Happening Behind the Scenes

Our riders may only see the vehicle that arrives at their door, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes.

Our dispatchers are coordinating multiple riders, vehicles, appointment times, destinations and return trips throughout a large rural county and beyond. Our drivers are working together throughout the day to make those schedules work.

Sometimes that requires a little flexibility from all of us.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our riders. Every decision we make throughout the day is centered around safety, efficiency and doing our best to make sure everyone gets where they need to go, and gets back home.

Thank you for trusting Carroll County Transit with your transportat

🚎CARROLL COUNTY HISTORY — THEN & NOW 🕰️

Long before Carroll County Transit buses traveled our roads, transportation was already shaping the future of Carroll County.

Savanna, Illinois

Savanna was settled in 1828 along the Mississippi River and became an important transportation and shipping point for the region. Before railroads and modern highways, steamboats brought people and supplies into the area, while local farmers traveled to Savanna to sell their goods and purchase necessities.

When Carroll County was officially formed in 1839, Savanna became our county’s first county seat before it was later moved to Mount Carroll.

Nearly 200 years later, the way we travel has certainly changed from riverboats, wagons and railroads to cars and public transportation, but one thing hasn’t:

Transportation keeps our communities connected. ❤️

Today, Carroll County Transit is proud to continue that tradition by connecting the people and communities throughout the county we call home.

History is all around us, sometimes right along the roads we travel every day. 🚎💙

🎉WE DID IT, CARROLL COUNTY! 🎉

Carroll County Transit is celebrating another RECORD-BREAKING YEAR!

This year, we provided an incredible 30,400 RIDES! 🙌

To put that into perspective, Carroll County has around 15,400 residents. That means we provided enough rides to equal almost TWO RIDES FOR EVERY PERSON IN THE ENTIRE COUNTY! 🤯🚌

For a small rural county, that’s something we think is pretty amazing, and definitely something worth celebrating! 💙

Every one of those 30,400 rides has a story behind it. A ride to work. A doctor’s appointment. School. Shopping. A visit with family. A day out. Or simply the ability to stay independent and connected to our community.

We couldn’t have reached this milestone without our incredible drivers and staff, our community partners, and especially YOU our riders!🙌🏼

Carroll County Transit does more than just give people a ride. It’s a lifeline.

Every ride has a purpose. Every passenger matters. And every mile we travel is about serving the people of Carroll County.
