Brake Safety Week Starts Sunday: Is Your Truck Ready?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) annual Brake Safety Week kicks off Sunday and continues through Aug. 29. If your truck is due for maintenance, now is the time to make sure its braking system is in top condition.

During the week-long enforcement campaign, inspectors across North America will conduct commercial vehicle inspections with a special focus on brake systems and components. Any vehicle found with brake-related out-of-service violations, or other serious safety defects, will be taken off the road until the issues are repaired.

This year's initiative places added emphasis on brake drums and rotors, two critical components that directly impact braking performance. According to the CVSA, damaged or deteriorated drums and rotors can reduce brake effectiveness and may even break apart while a vehicle is in motion, creating serious hazards for other motorists and potentially leading to injuries or fatalities.

Last year's Brake Safety Week resulted in 15,175 commercial vehicle inspections, with 2,296 vehicles placed out of service for brake-related violations.

Brake issues continue to be a major concern. Earlier this year, during the CVSA's one-day unannounced brake inspection event, officers conducted 4,021 inspections and sidelined 574 vehicles due to brake-related out-of-service violations.

With enforcement efforts ramping up, fleets and drivers are encouraged to inspect their equipment and address any brake-related concerns before hitting the road.

Before IFTA, trucking was a different game. Drivers had to track every mile and every gallon of fuel purchased in every state they traveled through.

Many of us made sure to buy at least a little fuel in each state because if you ran through a state without buying fuel there, you'd still owe that state's fuel tax without having any fuel purchase credits to help offset it.

And who remembers the old "bingo card"? Every state had its own fuel tax stamp, permit, or marker, and filling that card up was just part of doing business.

Between the bingo card, logbooks, trip sheets, and stacks of fuel receipts, a truck driver's cab looked more like an accountant's office than a truck.

Today we may grumble about IFTA, but those of us who were around before it know just how much paperwork and planning it replaced.

We had to keep up with the beginning miles entering a state and ending miles leaving each state.
