Let’s face it, moving can be stressful and expensive! So, here is a tip to help reduce both: Label your boxes! Sounds obvious, right? Well, the trick to this is HOW you label your boxes. Most people label their boxes with a description of their contents. This is helpful for owners when it comes time to unpack their belongings. But you know what it doesn’t help with? Telling your movers where your boxes should go. With this method of labeling, owners must stand at the front door of their new home, stop each mover, to read each box, and make a split-second decision of where each box should go (which causes stress and is often changed later). Not only is this method of labeling stressful, it’s also expensive. Anything that slows down your movers, increases the time you are billed, costing you MORE money.
The solution? Make a kindergarten approved map of your new home and label each room with an abbreviation (abbreviations save time during labeling). Then, label all four sides and top of each box, with the appropriate abbreviation for the room in your new home, you want the box to go to. This gives you more time to decide where boxes should go during the labeling process (which is free if you pack yourself), rather than moving day when you’d be running up the clock. On moving day, tape the map to the front door and label each room with a sticky note to help the movers remember which room is which. Now, instead of directing traffic at the front door on moving day, you can relax and unpack while the movers deliver your belongings to their appropriate location. Thus, reducing your stress on moving day, while saving you time and MONEY!
