Last Wednesday, the Port of Moses Lake was pleased to host the first phase of Community Alignment and Opportunity Discovery for an exciting Industrial Symbiosis effort focused on the Wheeler Corridor and the broader industrial community it supports.
Building on the Port’s recently announced technical assistance award through the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Industrial Symbiosis Technical Assistance Program, the meeting brought together local industry with regional and Danish technical experts to discuss and refine opportunities to turn shared resources, infrastructure, byproducts, energy, water, materials, and local expertise into long-term value for businesses, workers, and the regional economy.
Port of Moses Lake Executive Director Dan Roach said the effort is an important step toward understanding how existing industry and infrastructure can work together more efficiently while preparing for future demand. “This process gives us a way to look at the Wheeler Corridor as a connected system, not just as individual businesses,” Roach said. “By understanding what is already here and where future needs are headed, we can begin identifying practical opportunities that support both industry and the broader community over the long term.”
We are especially grateful to our guests from Denmark, Jakob Hebsgaard and Anders Larsen of Hebsgaard Larsen, for traveling to Moses Lake and sharing their experience to grow momentum for this important work. Their insight, along with the expertise of the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI) team, Washington State Department of Commerce, Jacobs Solutions Inc., Sol Coast Consulting and Design, LLC, and AngmarTek helped create a strong foundation for the work ahead.
Speakers and contributors included Rhys Roth, Shannon Souza, Laura Gloria, Jakob Hebsgaard, Anders Larsen, Steve Worley, and Harris Nakajima, who helped guide conversations around Washington’s Industrial Symbiosis Phase 1 work, community priorities and vision, resource and infrastructure mapping, and the facility assessment and technical assistance review process.
After the meeting, participants continued the conversation over lunch and a tour of the Wheeler Corridor, Sila Nano, and Twelve, The Carbon Transformation Company Airplant, seeing firsthand the assets and opportunities that could help shape a collaborative, resource-efficient industrial hub.
