Buying a Shed Without Runners Is Not a Good Idea
When shopping for a portable shed, many buyers focus on the size, appearance, and price of the building. However, one of the most important features is often overlooked: the runners underneath the shed. Runners are the heavy-duty beams that support the entire structure and make transportation possible. Purchasing a shed without runners may seem like a way to save money, but it can create significant problems down the road.
The primary purpose of runners is to provide structural support. They distribute the weight of the shed evenly and help prevent sagging, twisting, and floor damage over time. Without runners, the shed relies solely on the floor framing for support, which can lead to premature wear and costly repairs.
Another major issue is transportation. Portable sheds are designed to be moved when necessary. Whether you’re relocating the shed on your property or moving it to a new location, runners allow specialized equipment to safely lift and transport the building. A shed without runners is much more difficult and expensive to move. In some cases, it may require extensive modifications before it can even be transported.
Sheds without runners are also more vulnerable to moisture damage. Runners create separation between the building and the ground, allowing air to circulate underneath. This airflow helps keep the floor dry and reduces the risk of rot, mold, and insect infestation. When a shed sits too close to the ground, moisture can become trapped beneath it, causing long-term structural problems.
From a resale standpoint, sheds with runners are typically more desirable. Buyers understand the value of a shed that can be moved and maintained easily. A shed without runners often has a lower market value because future owners know they may face transportation and structural challenges.
At A to Z Transport, we frequently encounter sheds that were built without runners and later need to be relocated. In many cases, we are able to build and install custom frame runners underneath the shed to make transportation possible. However, this process is not inexpensive. It requires skilled labor, quality materials, specialized equipment, and additional time to safely lift and reinforce the structure. What could have been included during the original construction of the shed often becomes a much larger expense later.
Many customers are surprised to learn that the money they saved by purchasing a shed without runners is often outweighed by the cost of adding them after the fact. The extra labor, materials, and transportation preparation can significantly increase the overall cost of moving the building.
In the end, buying a shed without runners is usually a short-term savings that leads to long-term headaches. For durability, transportation, moisture protection, and resale value, runners are one of the most important components of a quality portable shed. Investing in a shed built with proper runners from the beginning can save substantial money, time, and frustration in the future. At A to Z Transport, we’ve seen firsthand that having proper runners is always the better investment.@
