This is one example of why Yamaha recommends servicing the VST every 5 years or 500 hours, whichever comes first! This 4.2L F300 had under 500 hours but is 10 years old. It’s a well maintained engine and boat, but the VST hadn’t been serviced.

Also included in the VST service is replacement of both filters/screens inside the VST as well as all o-rings and seals. And of course a thorough cleaning of the tank.

This is why I always remove props and thrust washers during every service. It allows us to inspect prop shaft seals and catch things like fishing line before they compromise the seals and allow water in or even worse gear oil out! This one wasn’t too bad, but it still needed to be removed before it caused a big problem.

Why is annual service so critical you ask? Here is one example, water in your gasoline will ruin your day and can hurt your wallet also. Luckily, this center console had a boat side fuel water separator filter and it did its job, but it still needed to be changed before that water ends up in the engines fuel system. Most pontoon boats don’t have a boat side fuel water separator and the engine’s primary filter would have been overcome by this much water. Not only would it have ruined your day, but if you don’t get that water out of the VST, it can ruin the fuel pump also. The cost of the fuel pump and labor is well above the cost of an annual service. A simple service eliminates the additional expense and the loss of time on the water.

Ouch on both fronts!

Extracted the broken coil bolt and a reseal of the driveshaft is inbound for this Mercury 115EFI.

Looks like an upper driveshaft seal replacement for this Mercury 115EFI. Glad we caught it before the bot went into service for the summer. It likely saved the lower unit.

We Come To You to repair and maintain your outboard engine.
