STILL A FEW SPOTS AVAILABLE FOR PRESENTERS AT THE
76th ANNUAL HARBOR MASTERS PORT CAPTAINS CONFERENCE - FEBRUARY 20-23, 2024 AT THE ASILOMAR CONFERENCE CENTER IN PACIFIC GROVE.

There are a few spots available for for compelling speakers, presenters and experts on topics that will help our members improve their operations, their systems and internal processes, their public interactions and to inspire them for future success.

We prefer Conference presentations to be approximately 45 minutes with an additional 10 -15 minutes for Q & A following their presentations.

We are looking for presentations and experts in the following areas of focus:
*Diversity and Inclusion
*Handling Delinquent Accounts and preventing future delinquencies
*Creating and Implementing successful maintenance programs
*Building Life Balance without jeopardizing your career

However, please feel free to submit presentations on other topics that you feel would be of benefit to our Members.

If there was ever a great day for harbor masters and port captains to celebrate - it would be today, which is CAT HERDER'S DAY!

Although the only job remotely close to actual cat herding is working at your local animal shelter, this holiday is not dedicated to cats. This celebration is meant for those who can manage others and themselves no matter what chaos is thrown their way. The idiom, “like herding cats,” was popularized during a Super Bowl commercial in 2000 by EDS. They compared their ability to serve others like cowboys herding cats – with ease. Since then, the phrase is mostly used to describe those who can lead and handle life even when it is uncontrollable. The term is also considered a skill workers use when leading a group towards one goal.

Make you day a little brighter by watching the original commercial - just use the "Googler" and type in Superbowl 2000 Cat Herding - do it and SMILE!

Interesting…

Topgolf and other so-called “eatertainment” venues, along with parks and more, are planned as the Port of San Diego pursues an entertainment district on a portion of East Harbor Island. The goal is to bring new public access and recreation opportunities where none currently exists, as well as to provide leisure activities and food and beverage options for visitors and locals.

Just in case you are maxed out on those sweet, colorful holiday cookies or (worse yet) the dreaded fruitcake that our wonderful patrons keep dropping off in our harbor, port or marina offices - The California Association of Harbor Masters and Port Captains encourages you to take a break and celebrate NATIONAL BROWNIE DAY today.

In the answer to that internal question you are thinking - "What is the History of the Brownie"....here it is!

Legend has it that the creation of brownies hales from the Palmer House Hotel in 1893. Bertha Palmer, a prominent Chicago socialite whose husband owed the hotel, asked a pastry chef for a dessert suitable for ladies attending the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. She requested a cake-like delicacy small enough to be included in boxed lunches. The result was the Palmer House Brownie with walnuts and an apricot glaze. The modern Palmer House Hotel serves a dessert to patrons made from the same recipe. The name was given to the dessert sometime after 1893, but was not used by cook books or journals at the time.
