⚠️ Breaking News: Shocking Bridge Collapse in Baltimore ⚠️
In a heart-wrenching incident early Tuesday morning, the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship. A new bill in Georgia aims to prevent insurers from being sued directly after truck crashes, potentially changing the current system significantly. Supporters believe this would increase insurance availability and lower premiums for trucking companies. However, opponents argue that it would hinder victims' ability to recover damages. Legislation heading to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to bar most truck-crash lawsuits against insurance companies would reduce premiums and lead more insurers to write policies, supporters say.

A surprise ruling from the Federal Maritime Commission just overturned a decades-old system that has long dictated how chassis are allocated and priced. The FMC sided with motor carriers in a landmark case, confirming that major ocean carriers have violated federal law with their current practices.

For years, the 12 largest ocean carriers have controlled chassis pools at ports nationwide, designating exclusive chassis providers and essentially denying motor carriers the ability to negotiate rates or choose their preferred equipment provider. The FMC found this restricts competition and negatively impacts efficiency.

The ruling focused on ports in Georgia, California, Tennessee, and Illinois but will likely spur further legal challenges at other locations. Industry experts estimate unlawful overcharges from these practices could total $1.8 billion over three years.

While the ocean carriers argued the existing system is necessary to ensure adequate chassis supply, the FMC disagreed, finding no evidence to support those claims. The commissioners ruled that arguments about financial harm were “legally immaterial.”

This is a huge win for motor carriers and intermodal stakeholders that have spent more than a decade fighting these foreign-owned ocean carriers. The chassis landscape is about to look very different.

An administrative law judge ruling against the current system of chassis pools was upheld by the full Federal Maritime Commission.
