Prompt Closure of Indian Creek Beach Due to Elevated E. Coli Levels

Mark Twain Lake, Missouri, May 23, 2025 – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake is temporarily closing Indian Creek Beach due to an increased presence of E-Coli bacteria found during weekly water quality assessments performed at all public swimming beaches. Bodies of water such as reservoirs, ponds and streams have low levels of naturally occurring bacteria. When levels of bacteria, such as E-Coli are determined to be elevated during routine assessments, it is necessary to close the facility for short periods of time to provide for public safety until natural processes can reduce the presence of the bacteria.

Despite this short-term closure, Spalding Beach and the Mark Twain State Park Beach will remain open for public enjoyment. Water quality will continue to be monitored at all public swimming beaches, and when bacteria levels are safe, Indian Creek Beach will be re-opened for public use.

Mark Twain Lake hopes you have a safe and fun Memorial Day holiday. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake by email at [email protected] or call 573.735.4097.
