Lake views never get old

Happy Anniversary! 28 years ago on August 28, 1998, Seaplanes R Fun flew its first passenger out of Jiggs Landing on the Braden River in Bradenton, Florida.

Today we have three locations: one in Vermont, and two in Virginia as SML Aviation. The fleet has grown. The staff has grown. What hasn’t changed is why we do this.

Our passion is still teaching old-school aviation in old-school airplanes — the kind of flying that rewards feel, judgment, and a well-kept machine.

I could not have done any of this without our team. Instructors, maintenance, and everyone who shows up every day and treats this like more than a job. You are the reason we’re still here.

To everyone who has flown with us, trained with us, or trusted us with a first flight — thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

Huge congrats to Chris Ramos on earning his CFI! ✈️ First-generation pilot for his family!

Originally from Mexico he started training in Georgia in 2023, while also earning his A&P (we often find Chris in the maintenance hangar). He then headed to Liberty for his Bachelor’s, Commercial, and Multi-Engine, graduating last May. Man of many talents!

In Virginia he found SML, started renting, and felt right at home in the community at Smith Mountain Lake. He completed his CFI training here—and now he’s excited to step into instructing and help others learn to fly. He’s such a fun person to be around, any school/student would be lucky to have him. Chris is one step closer to achieving his airline dream job!

Proud of you, and glad SML was part of the journey.

Solo to CFII, you’re hired! Huge round of applause for Owen, our newest instructor at SML Aviation. We couldn’t be more proud of him.

Owen has been training the last few years while working full time as an engineer. Earning his private, instrument, commercial, CFI, and now CFII. Multi-engine next! We’re lucky to have such a great student join our team. See you in the soup!
