SML Aviation has a long and diverse lineage in aviation. A history who's roots reach back to the early days of aviation, the airlines and beyond. SML Aviation employs a team of professional flight instructors who are highly trained, experienced, and committed to providing the best training available in general aviation. Learning to fly from SML Airport is a unique and rewarding experience, there simply isn't another like it. Stick and Rudder skills are taught and mastered from day one, all from a facility that welcomes friends and family. Our training center provides training from sport pilot through commercial and advanced pilot ratings. We provide pilots the opportunity to learn within a structured academic environment and receive a quality aviation education.

CFI success story 📖

Tommy started flight training in May 1999, while he was still in high school. His dad, an American Airlines captain at the time, was his instructor.

Tommy finished his private pilot certificate in July 2001, ready to start the path to the airlines. Then 9/11 hit, and the industry entered a dark period.

He looked for another career and graduated Virginia Tech with an IT degree. Tommy spent nearly 18 years in that world, ending up as a director for a global consulting firm, but his heart wasn’t in it.

Tommy’s dad soon got his seaplane rating and taught Tommy in a 1947 Piper J-3 Cub on floats. Once Tommy was behind the stick again, the fire came back. He knew he had to go after the life he actually wanted.

He went part-time in IT and found an amazing instructor at SML Aviation. He spent the next year training for his instrument, commercial, and instructor certificates. Once he was a CFI, he started teaching at SML — trying to give back the love and knowledge that had been given to him.

Tommy is now a First Officer at PSA Airlines, flying the CRJ 700/900 under the American Eagle brand. As of this writing, he’s looking at a captain upgrade in the next month or two. He even gets to fly right into Roanoke, seeing friends, family, and former students.

He was fortunate to find great instructors, a solid fleet, an owner who cares about this industry, and the maintenance staff and hangar family at the field.

SML Aviation will always hold a special place in his heart. We can’t wait to see you in the left seat, Tommy.
