Continuing our journey along Italy’s western coast, we arrive in Liguria - the country’s third-smallest region, yet one of its most densely populated and visually striking. Often known as the Italian Riviera, Liguria is a slender crescent of land wedged between the Maritime Alps and Apennines and the shimmering Ligurian Sea.

This unique geography creates a region of dramatic contrasts: rugged cliffs plunging into azure waters, a mild Mediterranean climate, and a string of colorful coastal towns that seem to defy gravity. From the iconic villages of the Cinque Terre to the polished elegance of Portofino, Liguria’s coastline is unforgettable. Add the historic port city of Genoa, the refined seaside charm of Sanremo, and the medieval beauty of Dolceacqua, and the region reveals depth far beyond its size.

This is a region close to my heart. I have many fond memories here, especially in the Cinque Terre, and more recently in Portofino and nearby Camogli. There’s a certain magic to Liguria’s coastline that I’ve yet to find anywhere else in Italy… and that’s saying something. And the food? Simple, fresh, and absolutely unforgettable.

Moving north through Italy, we arrive in Emilia-Romagna, a region that quietly excels at almost everything: culture, cuisine, craftsmanship, and innovation. Home to the University of Bologna, the oldest university in the world, this region has long been a center of learning, creativity, and influence.

From the historic streets of Bologna and the elegance of Modena to storybook towns like Bobbio, Brisighella, and Castelvetro, Emilia-Romagna blends Romanesque and Renaissance heritage with a deeply lived-in, authentic feel. It’s also a land of makers, known globally for legendary automotive brands and centuries-old artisanal traditions.

And then there’s the food. Emilia-Romagna is often called Italy’s culinary heart, celebrated for egg and filled pastas, Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto, mortadella, traditional balsamic vinegar, and Lambrusco wine. Every dish tells a story, rooted in local pride and regional identity.

My exploration of this remarkable region has so far been centered on Bologna, and it left a lasting impression. The city’s elegant architecture and endless porticos create a regal, timeless atmosphere; the food tour more than lived up to expectations; and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca was a true highlight - majestic, serene, and offering sweeping views over the lush, green hills surrounding the city.
