Based out of Milwaukee, WI plus shipwrecks along the Wisconsin coast. The main diving season May to October with prime season in June, July, and August. It’s a very unique experience for many reasons. The Great Lakes contain 20% of the world’s fresh water. The lakes once looked like a freeway with ships everywhere. Some of these ships were not so fortunate and ended up shipwrecked due to heavy sto

rms, boiler explosions, running aground, or collisions with other ships and ice. There are thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes each with its own unique history. What to expect

The water temperatures are the coldest in the spring, by summer the surface warms up to 70F depending on where you are, but the bottom temperatures stay in the low 40’s. Generally, the southern parts of lakes warm up earlier in the season than the northern parts. Lake Superior, the biggest lake, warms up the slowest. The clarity of the water is excellent due to the introduction of zebra and quagga mussels in the last several decades that reached to all of the lakes except Lake Superior, which is mostly untouched by the mussels. As a result, divers can observe many shipwreck details in Lake Superior, while the other lakes offer spectacular panoramic views of entire steamships, freighters, and schooners.

I recently had a chance to watch this excellent video about the Rosinco shipwreck put together by Satolli Glassmeyer - History in Your Own Backyard.

What amazed me most was the vessel's journey before it became a Lake Michigan shipwreck. Originally built as the luxury yacht Georgiana III, she later served during World War I, patrolling Delaware Bay on the East Coast before eventually making her way to the Great Lakes. It's remarkable to think that a vessel with such a varied history ultimately came to rest on the bottom of Lake Michigan off Kenosha, Wisconsin.

I was honored to contribute the underwater photographs featured throughout the video. These images were taken during dives on the wreck several years ago, and it was great to see them help tell the story of this unique shipwreck.

Looking for a mid-week getaway?

We're heading out Wednesday evening June 3rd for our first evening dive of the season on the Prins Willem V ("Willie"), one of Milwaukee's most popular shipwrecks. Weather is looking favorable, and visibility has been excellent lately.

If you've been thinking about getting in the water, this is an easy way to break up the work week and spend an evening on Lake Michigan.

First real-world test of the new Insta360 X5 on Saturday’s Lake Michigan shipwreck dives aboard the Molly V!

We visited two classics:
• Milwaukee Car Ferry (100–130 ft)
• Prins Willem V (60–90 ft)

Water temp? A refreshing 39°F on the bottom and 40°F at the surface.

Everything was going perfectly… until my fat dry glove fingers apparently changed the camera mode underwater from video to timelapse/snapshots without me realizing it. LOL
But honestly, it turned into a fun first experiment anyway. I was able to salvage some underwater shots, surface action, diver descents, boat moments, and a few unexpectedly cinematic scenes that I never would have captured with a normal camera setup.

For a first Insta360 attempt:
• dive housing worked
• camera survived
• footage captured
• no leaks
• lessons learned
• success 😄

After months of work behind the scenes, the new Shipwreck Explorers website is officially launched.

This has been a big rebuild — bringing together our dive schedule, Great Lakes shipwreck maps, and detailed wreck information into one place. The goal was simple: make it easier for divers to explore, plan, and get out on the lake.

Now that the site is live, I’ll be actively updating the dive schedule — so keep an eye on it as new trips are added.

The season is here, the wrecks are waiting… and I’m excited to share this next chapter with all of you.
