Port Milwaukee was proud to join in on the celebration of the completion of the Dredged Material Management Facility (DMMF) today. The project was completed ahead of schedule and $26 million under budget. The DMMF will provide safe, secure containment for tons of contaminated sediment that will be removed from the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers, marking a major milestone in this partnership-driven cleanup effort.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District - MMSD partnered with the the City of Milwaukee, Port Milwaukee, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Milwaukee County, We Energies, and other stakeholders to create the new 42-acre storage facility that has the capacity to hold contaminated sediment equivalent to approximately 13 football fields filled to a depth of 50 feet.

The property will be owned and operated by Port Milwaukee. The DMMF project is part of a larger initiative to clean up the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern.

For decades, contaminated sediment has been building up in the Milwaukee Estuary. Today, partners are working to remove that legacy pollution and restore healthier conditions for fish, wildlife and people.

One important piece of that work is complete: the new Dredged Material Management Facility, which will support the safe management of contaminated sediment removed from the estuary.

So, as we celebrate this milestone, we’re also looking at the bigger picture: What does it take to clean up a waterway and what can happen when we do?

Check out these views! The tanker Stenheim arrived this week to load at the Liquid Cargo Pier.

This Pier has the capability of loading and unloading barges and tankers carrying liquid bulk products and is dredged to maximum Seaway depth. Pipelines extend from the Pier to various marine terminals at Port Milwaukee, including U.S. Oil.

Port Milwaukee also features approximately 300,000 barrels of bulk liquid storage capacity, including service capabilities via vessel, pipeline, rail and truck.

Port Milwaukee Director Benji Timm recently attended the American Association of Port Authorities 2026 Annual Convention in New Orleans. This convention is a yearly gathering for maritime leaders, partners, and operators from across the seaport industry. Every year, ports from across the country submit a welcome video showcasing their port. AAPA represents more than 130 public port authorities in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

“If you’ve ever driven over the City of Milwaukee's famous Hoan Bridge (Light the Hoan) you may have noticed large cargo ships passing through the breakwater on Lake Michigan. Those boats might be coming in with structural steel from Luxembourg or salt from Ohio or heading out with grain for North Africa or soy beans for the Middle East.

Domestic and international shipping is a year-round operation at Port Milwaukee, which handled a total of 2.3 million metric tons of cargo shipments in 2025. A key multimodal hub for commercial and tourism activity in the region, the port spans 467 acres of city-owned, filled land that is currently leased to 22 tenants, including commercial operators like Cargill Salt and The DeLong Co., Inc.
and recreational users like Summerfest and the Lake Express High Speed Ferry. It is also a turnaround point for several Great Lakes cruise ship lines with a third designated cruise ship dock opening.

Port Milwaukee’s 20-person staff includes civil engineers who design, develop and maintain the property’s infrastructure; an operations crew who handles everything form repairing equipment and driving boats to lawn care and security support; and a trade and marketing team that generates leads on new business, manages relationships with tenants, and manage the port’s federal Foreign Trade Zone designation.”

Happy World Maritime Day! This week Port Milwaukee welcomed three cruise ships. This was the second time this season that we had three cruise ships in the City of Milwaukee on the same day.

Our record breaking cruise season isn't slowing down! The last ship of the season will depart on Halloween. We are expecting approximately 20,000 passenger visits by the end of this season, which will include a total of 63 cruise ship calls.
