The destroyed stern of the very historical Hennepin, the worlds first self unloading vessel is seen 230’ down on the bed of Lake Michigan.

The Hennepin sank on her return trip home from Chicago after unloading gravel and heading back across the lake for Ferrysburg, MI.
She was tired, old and leaky, and went down 12 miles off of South Haven, Michigan due to taking on too much water despite her ten bilge pumps running.

All the crew was saved by the tug that was towing the converted barge.
Technical diver Ray Wilson illuminates the broken port side of the stern.
