Clogged sea chests! 🚨🛥️ That was my first thought when the captain contacted me. The yacht’s air conditioning had stopped working because there wasn’t enough seawater flow, leaving everyone without AC overnight.

The next morning, I was already underwater checking the problem. And exactly as I suspected — the sea chests were clogged with marine growth!

This is a luxury yacht over 60 feet long, only a few years old, and worth several million dollars. Yet something as simple as blocked seawater intakes can put expensive equipment out of service.

Clogged sea chests and seawater intakes are a common problem in South Florida. Restricted water flow can shut down air conditioning systems, affect generator cooling, reduce engine cooling efficiency, and potentially cause overheating.

Just ONE month sitting in the warm waters of South Florida — and look how much marine growth has accumulated on this yacht! Now imagine what it could look like after two or three months without cleaning.

Heavy barnacle growth makes underwater maintenance much more difficult. Removing it often requires more aggressive cleaning, which can damage or strip away antifouling paint along with the marine growth. Seawater intakes, strainers, and other underwater openings can become restricted or blocked, potentially causing overheating and expensive equipment failures.

Replacing a sacrificial anode on the trim plate of a large yacht. Anodes should generally be replaced when they reach about 50% wear. That's why the old one may still look pretty big, but on expensive yachts, it's better to replace these parts before they become a problem. Just like in aviation, preventive maintenance is much cheaper than dealing with the consequences of a failure.

You can clearly see the difference between the old and new anodes in this video. It's not just about their size, but how much sacrificial material remains to corrode instead of the metal components we're protecting.

After removing the old anode, we thoroughly clean the mounting surface to ensure proper metal-to-metal electrical contact. Then we securely install the new one until the next scheduled replacement.

During a scheduled monthly hull cleaning, we found a piece of rope wrapped around one of the propellers. Naturally, we removed it before it had a chance to create a bigger problem.

In Miami waters, we regularly find foreign objects around boats — ropes, plastic bags, fishing line, sticks, and other debris that can wrap around propellers and shafts or block underwater intakes and sea strainers.

This is one of the advantages of having the same diver regularly take care of your boat. We know what the underwater section looked like last month, so new damage, unusual wear, missing or deteriorating anodes, fishing line, rope, impact marks, or other changes are much easier to notice. We document what we see, report it to the owner, and keep an ongoing video history of the underwater condition of the vessel.

Over time, those monthly reports create a useful maintenance record. And when we’re talking about yachts worth millions — sometimes tens of millions of dollars — having documented evidence that the vessel has been regularly inspected, cleaned, and cared for certainly doesn’t hurt. A well-maintained yacht with a clear history is a very different proposition from a boat whose underwater condition is a complete unknown.

Sacrificial Anode Replacement | Yacht Boat Lift

This time we’re replacing the sacrificial anodes on the yacht’s boat lift system. This is an expensive underwater structure with multiple moving metal components that are constantly exposed to saltwater and can actively corrode without proper electrochemical protection.

That’s why we prefer to replace sacrificial anodes proactively — before they are completely consumed. A good rule is to replace them at around 50% depletion, and boats and underwater equipment kept continuously in Florida saltwater should have their anodes inspected regularly. There is no single replacement interval for every installation: water conditions, marina electrical environment, bonding and the amount of protected metal can significantly affect how quickly anodes are consumed.

For this job we use Zimar sacrificial anodes — a proven and reliable product. On expensive underwater equipment like a yacht boat lift, proper corrosion protection is definitely not where we recommend cutting costs.

A short clip from our final inspection video after cleaning a 64-foot yacht.

This is a newer, high-value yacht, but the underwater maintenance had been neglected for a while. Bringing everything back into good condition took roughly twice as long as it would on a yacht that receives regular, professional hull cleaning.

Extra time isn’t the only downside of irregular maintenance. The longer marine growth stays on the boat, the more aggressively it has to be removed. Barnacles and oysters attach firmly to the surfaces, requiring more mechanical cleaning and putting more stress on the antifouling coating, running gear, propellers, and other underwater components.

For us, it’s absolutely a manageable job — we actually enjoy bringing boats like this back into shape. But regular maintenance is always better: less aggressive cleaning, less impact on the antifouling, less time underwater, and a consistently clean underwater section.

Sacrificial anode replacement on a large yacht. A small component with a very important job — the anode sacrifices itself to help protect much more expensive underwater metal components such as shafts, propellers, rudders, thrusters, and other equipment from corrosion.

In Florida, anodes need close attention. We don’t rely only on time — we inspect their actual condition. A common guideline is replacement at around 50% depletion. On yachts that remain in saltwater year-round, regular inspections are important, and replacement may be needed roughly every six months depending on the vessel and its environment.

We use Zimar anodes and pick them up directly from the manufacturer here in South Florida. On large, expensive yachts, sacrificial anodes are definitely not the place to save a few dollars. The price of a quality anode is small compared with the cost of the equipment it protects.

Installation matters just as much as the quality of the anode. We remove the old anode, thoroughly clean the mounting surface down to clean metal, ensure proper metal-to-metal contact, then install and securely tighten the new one. Without proper electrical contact, even a high-quality anode cannot provide the protection it was designed for.

Sacrificial anode replacement on a large yacht.

In Florida, anodes need close attention. Saltwater is highly conductive and creates an aggressive environment for underwater metals. Sacrificial anodes are designed to corrode first, helping protect much more expensive components such as shafts, propellers, rudders, thrusters, and other underwater metal.

We don’t wait until an anode disappears completely. A common guideline is to replace sacrificial anodes at around 50% depletion. On yachts that stay in Florida waters year-round, regular underwater inspections are important because the actual rate of anode consumption depends on the vessel, marina, electrical environment, and operating conditions.

For our work, we prefer Zimar anodes. Zimar is a South Florida manufacturer specializing in marine zinc anodes, and we like their approach to quality. Their zinc anodes are hand-poured from 99.995% pure zinc, and the company produces more than 290 different models for yachts and marine equipment.

Yes, a proven product may cost a little more. But on a large, expensive yacht, this is not the place to save a few dollars. The anode is inexpensive compared with the shafts, propellers, thrusters, and other equipment it helps protect.

Installing a thruster protection grate.

One of the stainless-steel bars on this grate had broken off, so the grate was removed for repair. The stainless bar was welded back into place, and we reinstalled the grate underwater. The yacht was ready to continue operating.
