Steel coils are not the kind of cargo you want sitting high on a standard flatbed.

That’s why Coolmore Truck Lines uses dedicated coil trailers. The coil sits lower in the trailer, with the frame built around its shape and weight, giving it a more secure position for the road.

This year’s focus is on brake drums and rotors, with inspectors paying close attention to their condition during roadside checks.

What looked like a trailer was actually a complete truck.

Introduced in 1950 by Twin Coach, the Fageol TC CargoLiner placed the driver at the very front and combined the cab, engine, drivetrain, and cargo body into one self-propelled vehicle.

The idea was to carry a trailer-sized load without connecting a separate tractor.

The 35-foot vehicle was promoted as being roughly 8 to 10 feet shorter and about 8,000 pounds lighter than a comparable tractor-trailer combination. Its compact design also gave it a turning radius of around 39 feet 6 inches, which was impressive for a cargo vehicle of its size.

Only one demonstrator was produced, and the CargoLiner never became a regular sight on American highways. Still, it remains an interesting example of how truck manufacturers were rethinking cargo transportation more than 75 years ago.

When a truck starts to feel different, the right move is to slow down, find a safe place to stop, and check the load.

Steel coil hauling leaves no room for guessing. Steel coils are part of what we regularly haul at Coolmore Truck Lines. We use trailers made for coil loads and carry the chains, binders, blocking, and other equipment needed for the job.

Our drivers know what to watch for and how a loaded truck should feel on the road. When something feels off, they slow down, stop somewhere safe, and inspect the load before moving again.

With cargo this heavy, stopping to check the load is always the right call.

Heads up, drivers - Operation Safe Driver Week is coming July 12–18.

CVSA says law enforcement will be watching for unsafe driving behaviors from both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. This year’s focus is reckless, careless, or dangerous driving.

Before the week begins, keep the basics locked in:

• Watch your speed.
• Keep enough space ahead.
• Put the phone down.
• Buckle up every time.
• Stay alert through lane changes.
• Get proper rest before the run.
• Keep calm in traffic and tight areas.

A clean inspection starts with the choices made behind the wheel.
