While I sit here taking a quick break and waiting for my favorite tiny little creature to wake up from his nap, I figured I’d share what LB and I’ve been working on today.

So far, we’ve started a batch of caramelized onions that I’ll can and put up for later, because I have officially unlocked my new ADHD obsession. 

I also took full advantage of USA Vegetable having their 5-pound bags of onions for $1 a bag. ONE DOLLAR. And because apparently I have absolutely no self-control when produce is that cheap, I also brought home a bushel of green bell peppers for $15.

So now we have:

• Freezer packs of peppers and onions  in the freezer
• Onion broth going in the Instant Pot
• Caramelized onions doing their thing in the crockpot
• And a kitchen that smells like I actually know what I’m doing

Unfortunately, we also had some pork that just did NOT fare well from the last butcher we used. So rather than waste it, I’ve got some chops cooking down on the stove to become dog food.

Now I’m going to enjoy my few minutes of quiet before the tiny creature wakes up.

Meet the newest additions to Our Black Barn Farmhouse: our Berkshire breeding pair.
This boar is an absolute brickhouse, but don’t let that size fool you. He has the gentlest disposition. I was giving him treats of old turkey eggs, and he was so incredibly gentle taking them right from my fingers. The sow is just as special. She has that same calm, kind, soft personality that makes you genuinely enjoy being around her.
We are so excited to have these two here and even more excited about what they are going to bring to our breeding program.
We actually had the opportunity to deliver a litter of their piglets to the processor not too long ago, and those piglets grew out to finishing weight beautifully. They looked absolutely amazing.
Now we get to watch what this pair can do here at Our Black Barn. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to add them to the herd, and we have a feeling these two are going to do some great things for us.

When I tell you, no one get on my nerves more then my own self!
Today is day 1 of collecting turkey eggs over the next week ish… but today… day 1 of collecting eggs… I run into my garden gate with the egg in my pocket….

His daddy isn’t just teaching him how to drive. He’s giving him small opportunities to learn, build confidence, and get a feel for the family business.
Yesterday, one of those small steps was moving the transport truck with a 16-foot horse trailer behind it.
Today, he’s simply a little boy learning from his daddy. But those little opportunities have a way of becoming something bigger down the road.
