🚌 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY SERIES
🚗 Motorist Tip #4: Give the Bus a Little Extra Room

A little extra space from you gives our driver a lot more room to keep everyone safe. ❤️

School buses are long vehicles, and their size can make everyday turns, intersections, narrow roads, and tight spaces a little different than they are in a car. A little patience and extra space from other motorists can make a big difference.

↪️ We need a little extra room to complete a turn.
A school bus stays in its lane as it approaches a turn—we don’t swing out into another lane first. But because of the length of the bus, we may need a little extra roadway as we complete the turn. If you’re stopped near an intersection, leaving us some extra space helps our driver make that turn safely.

👀 We have large blind spots.
If you’re following too closely or sitting where our mirrors can’t pick you up, our driver may not be able to see you. Give us enough space so we know you’re there.

🚌 We may slow down when you aren’t expecting it.
There could be a bus stop ahead, a child nearby, a narrow road, construction, an obstruction, or something our driver can see that you can’t. Please be patient rather than immediately trying to go around us.

🚗 Give us some following distance.
Following too closely limits what you can see and gives you less time to react. Leaving a little extra room gives both you and the bus driver more time to see what’s happening and respond safely.

🌳 Be especially patient on rural and narrow roads.
Low branches, parked vehicles, mailboxes, construction, oncoming traffic, and tight spaces can all require a school bus driver to slow down or carefully adjust their position.

Our drivers aren’t trying to hold up traffic. They’re maneuvering a large vehicle while carrying some pretty precious cargo. 💛

So when you find yourself behind or beside a school bus, give us a little room and a little patience.

Share the road. Give us some space. We’re all working toward the same thing—getting our kids where they need to go safely. ❤️

Before the sun is up ☀️, before the coffee has kicked in ☕, and before most of the world even knows what day it is… our drivers are already rolling! 😴➡️🚌

We’ve missed those little faces and big personalities, and we’re so happy to be back on the road with our students! Let’s make it a GREAT year! 🎉🚌📚

🚌 **SCHOOL BUSES ARE BACK — STAY ALERT & KEEP STUDENTS SAFE!** 🛑

As students head back to school, our roads are once again filled with school buses carrying some very important passengers. 💛

**Distracted driving can wait. Our students’ safety can’t.**

📵 Put the phone down
👀 Keep your eyes on the road
🚌 Give school buses plenty of space
🛑 Never pass a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended
🚸 Watch carefully for students at bus stops and crossing the street
⏰ Slow down and allow yourself extra travel time during morning and afternoon bus routes

A text, notification, or phone call is never worth putting a child’s life at risk.

Our school bus drivers work hard every day to get students to school and back home safely. **We need everyone on the road to do their part, too.**

💛 **See the bus. See the lights. See the students. STOP and STAY ALERT.**

Together, we can make this back-to-school season a safe one for every student, every driver, and every community.

🚌 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY SERIES
🚗 Motorist Tip #3: NEVER Pass a Loading or Unloading School Bus

You aren’t just passing a bus.
You’re passing CHILDREN.

When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, children may be getting on, getting off, or crossing the roadway.

And sometimes, you may not be able to see them.

Please NEVER:

🚫 Pass a stopped school bus on the left.
🚫 Try to squeeze around the bus on the right.
🚫 Creep forward because you think the children are finished crossing.
🚫 Start moving while the red lights are still flashing.
🚫 Pull up so close to the bus that the driver can no longer clearly see your vehicle.

Give the bus—and our children—SPACE.

When our red lights are on, our driver has a lot happening at once.

👀 We are watching mirrors.
🧒 We are counting children.
🚸 We are watching students who need to cross.
🚗 We are checking traffic in every direction.
✋ We may be signaling a child to STOP because we see a danger they don’t.

Please don’t become another danger the driver has to watch.

If you stop too close to the bus, creep forward, or begin moving before the red lights are turned off, you pull the driver’s attention away from the children.

And please remember this: A child can disappear from your view in an instant.

A student may be directly in front of the bus. Another may be crossing from the opposite side of the road. A child may drop something and turn back. A younger student may suddenly move in a direction no one expected.

That’s why motorists don’t get to decide when it’s safe to go.

THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER DOES.

🔴 If the red lights are flashing—STAY STOPPED.
🛑 If the stop arm is out—STAY STOPPED.
🚌 If children are still loading, unloading, or crossing—STAY STOPPED.

Do not move until the red lights are off and the stop arm is retracted.

Those extra few seconds you wait may feel inconvenient.

But to the child walking across that road—and to the school bus driver responsible for getting that child safely home—those few seconds can mean everything.

❤️ Give us room.
❤️ Stay where we can see you.
❤️ Wait for the lights to go off.
❤️ Let us finish counting our kids.

You aren’t waiting on a bus.
You’re waiting on someone’s child.

🚌🐾 Getting ready for another great school year! 🎒💛

Today, Lucy, one of our trainers here at G G & C Bus Company, was out helping our kindergarten students during orientation! We’re making sure our newest riders are ready, confident, and excited to ride the school bus. 🚌✨

We also had a busy day attending orientations at West End Elementary, First District Elementary, Second District Elementary, and Neason Hill Elementary!

And, of course, we got to meet the Bulldog today! 🐾💙 What a fun way to wrap up a busy day!

We’re getting ready for school, getting our buses ready, and most importantly, getting our kindergarteners ready for the ride to school. ❤️💛

Here’s to a safe, happy, and successful school year! 📚🚌
