We are at the London Heathrow Airport for the second time this week. This time with extra time to get checked in. While the check in process was still slow, we have all been checked in and gone through security. Our group was split up in two flights. We have 16 people on the first flight leaving at 2:40 pm London time and 9 people on the later flight at 4:20 pm London. Flight 1 is boarded!! Hoping to be stateside soon! ✈️🤞

Day 2 of being stuck in London:

Mr. Grey was able to work with our company to arrange a short day trip to a nearby zoo. We visited the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The weather cooperated and we had a nice stroll through the various areas of the zoo. We saw some giraffes, rhinos, hippos, bison, ostrich, and much more. It was nice to get some steps in and get out of the hotel. Many of us came back and relaxed with a quick swim before we pack up to go home (🤞) tomorrow!

Day 1 of being stranded in London: we took today to rest and relax although the communication/news/info has been anything but that…. Some of us have had our moments with stress and emotions due to the frustrating nature of this trip. However overall, we are all in decent spirits and trying to stay positive. We are hanging in as best that we can though and enjoying each others company. Many of us did manage to get to the pool and explore our beautiful grounds. The hotel staff have been kind and helpful. There is a wedding happening here and they arrived in a helicopter! Fireworks to celebrate later on. Trying to make the best of our extended stay. We are likely stuck here until July 25. 😭

Ps - it is a beautiful 5 star hotel.
Winston Churchill enjoyed this location and Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed vacationing here. Lots of history in this hotel.

The end of our British Isles adventure has been less than ideal (and still ongoing). Only 12 of the group was able to make the flight due to the worlds slowest computer system for checking in and getting locked out 1 hour before our flight. 25 of us remain in London… we ended up spending hours at the airport with no good news. 😭

We are grateful that we’re here together despite the challenges. Everyone’s doing their best to stay calm and make the best out of the situation. We are currently on a bus to a hotel for the next few days. We have our fingers crossed that we can return home sooner than planned.

Today was our last full day and it was filled with amazing adventures. We began the morning at Stonehenge… what a marvel! It was amazing to see the rocks and wonder about the reason and way that the ancient civilizations were able to move stones that weighed 2 tons (before even the wheel were invented!) What a magnificent world heritage site.

We then traveled to Bath, the location of the Roman Baths. Many people traveled each year to experience the healing powers of the spring. Some of the group even tried some of the water. Some of us went on an amazing tour of the city with our local guide, Peter. Peter The Great Tours was amazing. He had many amazing stories, facts, and his witty humor to share with us.

We had our last meal together at the pub in London. It was a fun evening together. Two of our students even had a chance to meet up with some family for the first time! I think most of us are exhausted and ready to go home, but it’s been a memorable and fun experience seeing these three countries with this wonderful group of people. What a special experience it has been these last two weeks. 😊

A busy day in London! We began with a bus tour of London where we passed London Bridge and then went to the famously iconic Tower Bridge. Amazingly, we caught the bridge just as it was going up and down to let a boat through. According to our guide this only happens once or twice a week these days. We went around to St. Paul’s cathedral, passed the theater district, and then Buckingham Palace.

We then ventured out to explore Windsor Castle! Many of us stopped into the magnificent St. Andrew’s Cathedral and some went explore the Queen’s Dollhouse and others the State Rooms! We saw some of the guards as well. We ended with a curry dinner in London before returning on the Underground to rest for one final day of adventures.

A busy and long day for the group. This morning we were up and out the door while it was dark to catch our flight from Edinburgh to London. A very groggy group got ready to board the plane (and some even boarded) before a fire alarm went off at the airport! Some of us had to disembark the plane and others were corralled from section to section in the airport while the fire department cleared the fire.

We arrived in London and dropped our belongings at the hotel before heading in to see some of the famous sights with our tour guide, Andrew. We got into the city via the “tube.” We saw Big Ben, the London Eye, the National Gallery, and Piccadilly Circus. Another beautiful day in London, the warmest of our trip so far… 86 degrees. But the sunshine and blue skies was the perfect opportunity for pictures! The day ended with a ride on a double decker to our delicious fish and chips dinner.

The most interesting early morning flight from Edinburgh Airport…. A fire alarm! Those who had boarded had to get off the plane and wait on the tarmac. The rest of the group was moved around to various locations while the fire department put out a fire in Burger King.

We are happy to report we have safely landed in London and are on our way to the hotel to drop our bags off for the day.

We left our castle home in the highlands of Scotland with beautiful views and a sun that set around midnight for the city of Edinburgh. Along the way we stopped by Stirling Castle to explore the history and views. Each of these castles have been well maintained and offer such incredible views being located on the top of the hills. A few additional stops for some scenic highlights including these majestic horse sculptures and the three bridges were arranged by our wonderful driver, Peter. The day ended with a delicious dinner at a carvery before our arrival at another beautiful castle hotel, the Barony Castle.

Edinburgh is a city with lots of history and beautiful sights! After a quick tour of the city which included a stop at the Holyrood Palace, we visited Edinburgh castle, a fortress on top of a hill with a beautiful view of the North Sea. Many of us visited the Crown Jewels before exploring the city on our own! The city is full of culture and history! Some of us spent part of the day shopping and eating and others visited the National Museum of Scotland which is where Dolly the Sheep is housed! It was a great day around the city with lots of adventures.

We have left Ireland and have traveled to Scotland via Ferry. What an incredible experience… the ferry holds lots of buses, cars, trucks, and people and brings them from Northern Ireland to Scotland. We enjoyed beautiful scenery as we drove through the Highlands in Scotland. A quick stop for lunch in Glasgow and then onto the castle hotel! We stopped in a quaint little village where we encountered a quick downpour and our first “pay to pee” bathrooms.

Today we explored Loch Ness (Lake Ness) where the legendary Loch Ness monster is said to be. Another beautiful day to enjoy lunch in the little town and do a little shopping. We rode the Loch Ness Cruise and some of us have new friends, “Nessie.” We saw our first Highland Cow and a sheep crossing in our way back to the castle where we are staying. Our hotel is a former castle and is located on the top of a mountain. Many beautiful views are captured while driving up and down the mountain and the town is adorable! About 300 people live in this adorable little town with lots of incredible sights and lots of history!

A most picturesque day at The Giant’s Causeway. The sun shone bright and the colors were beautiful while we explored the amazing stones left behind by the volcanoes. A lovely walk exploring area…. Followed by a visit to Derry where we learned about the tragic events of Bloody Sunday. Finally, we ended our day with dinner at the Cuffs (a restaurant housed in a former jail in Belfast) where we also celebrated Dr. Hu’s birthday!
