Running this 2006 Yamaha 25 HP 2 stroke long shaft. The customer stated that the motor was not charging the battery.

I ran a few tests and I found a loose connection with one of the rectifier leads. I corrected this connection. Now the batteries are being charged again. I also checked gear oil and made sure his water pump was working well before sending him on his way.

Subject: 1994 90hp Evinrude – Hard Starting and Performance Issues

Symptom:
The engine exhibited hard starting, a rough idle, and significant bogging under load.

Diagnostic Findings:
Initial troubleshooting focused on the primer solenoid, a common failure point for this model year. Testing confirmed the solenoid was stuck in the open position, causing an excessively rich fuel mixture (over-fueling) that flooded the cylinders during operation.

Repair Action: Replaced the faulty primer solenoid to restore proper fuel mixture and easy cold starts.

Fuel System Maintenance: Replaced aging fuel lines to prevent future vacuum leaks or debris contamination.

Outcome: Addressing the solenoid before performing a full carburetor teardown successfully isolated the root cause. The fuel system is now sealed, and the enrichment circuit is functioning as intended.

Customer reported poor performance and hard starting on their outboard motor. Diagnostics revealed a bad power pack causing a lack of spark in cylinder 2. After replacing the power pack, the motor runs at factory standards and is ready for use.

Subject: Evinrude 60HP Fuel System & Lower Unit Service

Diagnostic: Confirmed starting and idling issues were caused by a failed primer solenoid. The unit was stuck open, creating a constant rich fuel mixture that flooded the engine.

Repair: Replaced primer solenoid to restore proper cold-start functionality.

Lower Unit: Drained gear oil and performed a complimentary pressure test to verify seal integrity. Refilled with fresh marine lubricant.

Trailer: Identified a loose wheel hub during inspection. Currently installing new, high-temp greased wheel bearings to ensure towing safety.

Result: Engine now starts immediately and idles to factory specifications.

The motor on the left is a 1988 Johnson 15 HP and on the right is a 1974 Evinrude 15 HP.

The Outboard industry shifted from measuring HP from the crankshaft to measuring it at the propeller shaft around 1983 to account for drag from gear case and water pump.

Newer motors after 1983 were rated at the prop shaft often feel more powerful than older motors before 1983 with the same HP.

Customer came to me wanting help getting his 1975 15 HP Johnson going. First thing I found is low compression and this is what I discovered 😬 likely due to over heating, running too lean, or moisture getting into cylinders, or all the above at the same time lol.
The white marks on the top of the piston indicate moisture in the fuel mixture or leaking head gasket.
The piston is so scored that the ring is stuck compressed.

Had a 9.8 mercury long shaft come in with hard starting issues and a weak water pump. Installed a new impeller and rebuilt the carburetor and just like that she starts up first pull and the tell tail has lots of water pressure.
