Headed out last week for a four night, five day cruise on Three Lions. Fantastic weather and great sailing. The moorings at Isthmus Cove and Avalon were wide open. Spent the final two nights at a slip in Marina Park, Newport Beach before heading back home to MDR.

The sun is out, temperatures are rising, and Three Lions is ready to rock & roll for the Spring & Summer seasons!

The past couple of months have been super busy featuring a major electronics upgrade, maintenance haul out at Windward, and a host of other upgrades, fixes and/or deep cleaning work. Details below for anyone interested.

WORK COMPLETED - WINTER SPRING 2025/26

Original SIMRAD chartplotters, helm instruments and VHF radio removed and replaced with updated B&G units, specifically:

- Zeus 3S 12” chartplotter & Triton2 controls (c**kpit)
- Zeus 3S 9” chartplotter (cabin)
- V60-B VHF/AIS radio with H60 wireless handset

The new Zeus 3S chartplotters have brighter, crisper displays and much faster UI response times. They also feature the latest B&G sailing features developed for both cruisers and racers, including SailSteer, RacePanel, StartLine, Laylines, and SailingTime.

The V60-B VHF radio incorporates an AIS class B transmitter. This means that Three Lions is now visible to other vessels whenever the radio is turned on, greatly improving safety when underway in conditions with limited visibility (fog, night, etc.)

In February, Three Lions was hauled out for major maintenance work on the Saildrive unit. The unit was removed for inspection before being reinstalled with new oil, seals and a new diaphragm. The hull was also inspected and a thru hull replaced.

Other winter maintenance & upgrade work includes new stereo speakers in the c**kpit, refinishing of the four small portlight cabin windows, cleaned / resealed c**kpit teak decking and seat cushion cover laundering.

There are so many options... pick up a mooring at Two Harbors or Avalon, drop anchor at a more secluded slot in Catalina, and/or reserve a slip in Newport Beach... to name a few!

Upgrades and investments since the end of last season include:

- Haul out, bottom job, engine & sail drive service, new prop
- New 12-1/2 foot dinghy (6 person, wood floor) w/nav lights
- New large hatch installed above main cabin
- New bluetooth adaptor w/AUX link to main stereo
- New shower hose and shower head in main head
- New hinges in main cabin cabinets
- New mirrors in both heads and main cabin
- New silverware and cooking tools purchased for galley
- New propane tank (as a spare) under rear transom
- Replacement B&G wind sensor installed on masthead
- All mattress and cushion covers laundered
- Bent turnbuckle replaced, running rigging tuned
- Replacement SIMRAD display unit installed at stbd helm
- Transom swim platform rewired & tested
- Webasto diesel-powered hot air heater reset and tested.

Professional detailing of the hull & top deck will also be complete by the end of June.

UPDATE: Three Lions (MDR) now has upgraded c**kpit seat cushions on board. They’re for the long rear transom seating area and the two c**kpit side areas. Makes things a bit more comfortable for you and your crew / passengers when underway and when lounging at your final destination.

A few more updates as we prep Three Lions for the peak SoCal cruising season ⛵️

Five shiny new AGM batteries installed this past week… four house (800 CCA, 110 AH, 210 RC) and one engine (1010 MCA, 840 CCA, 160 RC).

Replacement Jib Halyard and mast sheave also installed earlier this month.

The rains have subsided, the sun is out and Three Lions is itching to get back out on the Bay! The transom platform issue has been fixed (wiring) and all wood in the c**kpit cleaned and resealed. Our 12-1/2 ft inflatable dinghy/tender has been deep cleaned, has new oars and a new cover. We also had a USCG Vessel Safety Check completed for the 2024 season.

We've had a busy month getting Three Lions ready for the 2023 season:

- New main & headsail installed, w/fresh outhaul & jib sheets,
- Engine serviced & new raw water intake c**k installed,
- Sail Drive serviced & new prop shaft installed,
- Hauled out at the Boatyard for a complete bottom job,
- Dropped rudder, installed new upper bearing,
- Various stains and scratches removed from the hull.

Note that the offshore life raft has been shifted from the hard-to-access rear transom area into the c**kpit lazarette under starboard seat.

Finally, the replacement forward hatch cover has finally turned up and will be installed in next few days.
