Learn to float in Aerial Yoga. ☀️

There is something powerful about taking weight off the body for a little while.

Inside the hammock, the nervous system experiences movement differently. The body begins exploring balance, coordination, grip strength, mobility, and spatial awareness all at once. The brain has to adapt in real time, creating new patterns of movement and attention.

And then something unexpected happens…
People start breathing deeper. Smiling more. Laughing again.

Suspension work can help decompress the spine, strengthen the core, improve flexibility, and challenge stabilizing muscles in ways traditional movement sometimes cannot. But beyond the science, aerial yoga reconnects many people to something they have not felt in a long time.

You are never too old to learn how to float. ✨

Aerial Yoga looks playful… because it is. But there is also some fascinating science happening every time you step into the hammock.

When the body is partially unloaded in the silk, pressure on the joints may decrease while the nervous system explores movement in a completely different way. Balance, coordination, grip strength, spatial awareness, and core activation all begin working together at once.

Your vestibular system — the part of the brain connected to balance and orientation — lights up during inversions and suspended movement. This is one reason aerial yoga can feel both energizing and strangely calming at the same time. You are literally teaching the brain and body how to communicate more efficiently.

And then there is the joy factor.
Swinging, floating, hanging upside down… it pulls many of us out of “adult survival mode” and back into curiosity and play. That shift alone can help regulate stress hormones and improve mood.

Movement changes chemistry.
Breath changes the nervous system.
And sometimes healing begins the moment we stop taking ourselves so seriously. ☀️

Come fly with us at Sunshine Yoga Shack.

Upward Facing Dog.
Urdhva Mukha Svanasana.
(erd-va moo-kah shvah-NAHS-uh-nuh)

This posture is more than a “backbend.” It is a full-body neurological wake-up call.

When you press firmly through the hands and lift the heart forward and up, you create extension through the spine that can help counter the rounded posture so many of us live in from driving, phones, desks, and stress. The chest opens, the diaphragm has more room to move, and the lungs can expand more fully.

From a science perspective, spinal extension stimulates the posterior chain muscles, strengthens the arms and shoulders, and activates the muscles surrounding the spine that help support posture and stability. Opening the front body may also influence mood and energy levels because posture and emotional state are deeply connected through the nervous system.

And let’s talk about the breath for a second…
When the sternum lifts and the rib cage broadens, breathing often becomes deeper and more efficient. Your body literally receives the message to wake up. ☀️

Yoga is ancient wisdom meeting modern neuroscience in real time.

Yoga changes the body… but it also changes the brain. 🧠✨

Every breath you take sends signals through the nervous system. Slow breathing can help calm the stress response, regulate cortisol, and increase activity in the parasympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for rest, healing, and recovery.

Movement and mindfulness together can increase GABA levels in the brain (your natural calming chemical), improve focus, support emotional regulation, and even strengthen areas of the brain connected to memory and self-awareness.

This is why people often walk out of yoga class saying:
“I feel different.”

Because you are.

Yoga is not just stretching muscles.
It is training the nervous system.
It is breath meeting biology.
It is ancient wisdom meeting modern neuroscience.

Somewhere along the way, the meaning became flattened into simple respect or politeness when it is actually something much deeper.

Honor means high regard, integrity, or adherence to what is morally right. But what struck me most is that honor is not simply what we admire. Honor is how we BEHAVE because of what we value!

What Do You Honor? Delve into how our actions reflect our values and the deeper meaning behind this powerful concept.

It began as a practice of awareness. A way to understand the mind, the breath, the body, and our connection to something greater than ourselves.

For thousands of years, yoga evolved through philosophy, meditation, breathwork, devotion, movement, and deep self-study. The postures we practice today are only one small piece of a much bigger story.

Every time you step onto the mat, you are participating in a tradition that has traveled across centuries, cultures, teachers, and seekers.

And maybe the most beautiful part?
Yoga is still evolving… through every person who practices it with intention. 💫

Does yoga make you stronger?
Yes. Absolutely. 🔥

Not just “hold a plank longer” strong.
We’re talking about real strength.

The kind that steadies your nervous system.
The kind that helps you breathe through hard moments.
The kind that teaches your body how to support itself with balance, mobility, and control.

Yoga builds strength from the inside out.
Muscles. Mindset. Breath. Resilience.

And one day you realize…
the things that used to feel impossible no longer shake you quite so much. ✨
