"Not a bad way to head into the weekend.
See you out there.

"There's always a bit of anticipation around the first hoist of a new sail.
For us, it's also useful.
Seeing the sail on the boat gives the loft a chance to look at the fit and shape, and feedback from the person actually sailing with it tells us even more.
So if your sailmaker asks for photos from your first sail, they're not just being nosy.
Although we do also like seeing the photos.

Just how we like it.

"Your old sail can tell us quite a lot.
How it's been used. Where it's worked hard. What you liked about it. What you didn't.
This before-and-after from Ullman Sails Florida shows just how much changes over the working life of a sail. Its shape, wear and high-load areas can all give your sailmaker useful information when it's time to talk about what comes next.
So if you're replacing a sail, don't be too quick to hide the old one away. Bring it into your local loft and let your sailmaker have a look.
It's got notes.

"From the Logbook: 2016.
A dig through the Ullman archive turned up these photos of the Moore 24 fleet from ten years ago, with quite a few familiar Ullman marks scattered through the fleet.
One of the boats pictured is Moore 24 #68, Gruntled. In 2016, Bart Hackworth and the Gruntled team claimed the Moore 24 National Championship, part of a four-year run of National titles for the boat from 2014 through 2017. David Hodges, whose own history with the Moore 24 goes back decades, was also part of the championship-winning Gruntled campaign in 2015.
Ten years later, the Moore 24 has just celebrated its 50th anniversary back in Santa Cruz.
Five decades on, the boats are still racing hard, the class is still going strong, and the community around them keeps coming back for more.
It made it particularly special to see an Ullman logo at the front of the fleet again in 2026, with Philippe Kahn and Pegasus #125 taking the 50th Anniversary National Championship.
Then: 2016. Now: 2026.
Some sailing stories are worth sticking around for.

"Sailing really is a lovely way to relax on the weekend.

A few hours on the water followed by carrying sails, folding sails, packing sails, moving bags and trying to remember which bag you put that thing in.

Same time next weekend?

"Not every boat needs another sail.

But if there's a gap in the inventory, you'll normally know about it.

That awkward wind range where you're asking a little too much from one sail and not quite enough from another.

That's normally where we'd start the conversation about adding a reaching sail. What are you sailing now? Where does it stop working well? And what do you actually want the new sail to do?

Sometimes the answer is another sail. Sometimes it isn't.
