In 1997, Wiggins Airways bought Stead Aviation at the Manchester Airport. At that time, the airport was a sleepy community that just built a sparkling new passenger terminal to attract airlines to the region. Greater Manchester became a more diverse population with growth from neighboring states to the South. The Wiggins Airways management group, led by then Chief Executive Officer David Ladd and Chief Operations Officer James H. Thomforde Sr., had the foresight to realize Manchester was a hidden gem in the region with capacity for development.
Wiggins Airways embarked on a project to build a general aviation terminal to match the beauty and user friendliness of the airline terminal. Completed in 1999, the general aviation terminal was a gleaming, modern and welcoming structure three-story structure with three full service hangars. The facility boasted the amenities of larger airports while offering quick and friendly service.
Some months after Wiggins Airways moved to Manchester, Southwest Airlines announced expansion to the Airport. The amount of airline traffic growth was unprecedented in the Northeast. Cognizant of the fact that a vibrant FBO must adjust to customer needs, Wiggins Airways embarked on a project to create an airline services facility to service commercial customers. Opening in 2004, the airline services facility allowed Wiggins Airways to store over 500,000 gallons of fuel and service airline ground support equipment as well.
In 2006, the airport name was changed to the Manchester ● Boston Regional Airport (KMHT). The name change recognized the growing role of Manchester in the Northeast airway system. In 2014, Wiggins Airways built a fourth hangar to support additional private and business jet traffic. Wiggins Airways invested over $15 million in facilities at KMHT with annual revenue earnings of $25 million. By 2014, Wiggins Airways had a fleet of 45 aircraft carrying cargo from Canada to South Carolina along with private charter aircraft for business customers. Founded in 1929, Wiggins Airways celebrated 85 years of operation and earned a solid, well-deserved reputation in the aviation general service and cargo industry.
