We absolutely love lunatics — welcome to the asylum! 🤪
Thinking of using a classic Mini as a daily driver? Bold move. Realistic? Mostly. But here’s the secret: if you own more than one, you’ll always have one that runs. (Usually.)
A few quick truths from the trenches:
💪🏻Early Minis = thicker steel, less rust…maybe.
🔧Maintenance isn’t “every so often” — it’s “every time you stop for fuel.” Which is often on that 5.5 gal tank.
🏁998 or 1275 if you plan to survive freeway speeds.
🌔Upgrade your headlights, unless you enjoy driving by Braille at night.
When we buy, we care less about the model year and more about rust levels and mileage. Rust repairs cost more than any fancy badge on the bonnet. None of ours still have the original badges 😜
Here’s the current cast of characters in our Mini soap opera:
🙏’95 Rover 1275 SPI – Brilliant when it runs, but the electrics have moods. Grounding issues are its love language. Likes to flirt with overheating — we travel with coolant, an extra fan, and a prayer.
🪫’90 Rover 998 Carb – Reliable little trooper. No creature comforts, but who needs them when you’ve got pure mechanical joy? Just keep a battery tender handy for the “occasional nap.”
🏄🏼♂️All the features of a ‘63 Countryman Woody MKI (identifies as a 73 Clubman) – Rare. But once they get to be this age they are mostly cross-bred. Currently in more pieces than a LEGO set. Not a daily unless you count pacing the garage floor.
And yes, every one of them marks its territory. Think of it as their way of saying, “I was here.” Bring extra oil — and a bit of kitty litter.
Do we ❤️ them? YES, we do! 💯 (except when waiting for a tow)
