An M10 in a sorry state.

The M10 was the US' primary tank destroyer during WWII. It was based on the reliable hull of the Sherman (either the M4A2 or M4A3) and carried the 3-inch gun M7.

Early in its production it was realised that the M7 gun was too heavy, offsetting the balance of the open topped turret. Large counterweights were added to the back of the turret to solve this.

Designed according to the US' highly mobile tank destroyer doctrine, the M10 was fitted with very thin armor, maxing out at 57 mm on the gun mantlet. The armor was heavily sloped to boost protection.

It fought alongside the M18 Hellcat and was succeeded by the M36, which was armed with a much more powerful 90 mm gun.
