Happy Friday! Here are some Airport safety tips to kick off your weekend!✈️

Safety starts with awareness. Whether you’re a pilot, employee, or visitor, staying alert and following airport safety procedures helps keep everyone safe. If you see something concerning, report it. Safe airports are everyone’s responsibility!

Airport Safety Tips:

* Always be aware of your surroundings while on airport property.
* Never walk on the airfield unless authorized and escorted.
* Stay clear of aircraft propellers and moving aircraft at all times.
* Obey all airport signs, markings, and security procedures.
* Report suspicious activity or unsafe conditions immediately.
* Keep vehicles on designated roadways and watch for aircraft crossing areas.
* Secure loose items that could become foreign object debris (FOD).
* Pay attention to weather conditions and changing runway conditions.
* Wear appropriate safety gear when working on the airfield.
* When in doubt, ask airport personnel before entering restricted areas.

🛬Runway Rundown - Airport Runway Numbers

Airport runway numbers are based on the runway’s magnetic compass direction. The number is the runway heading rounded to the nearest 10 degrees, with the last zero dropped.

For example,
A runway pointing about 180° (south) is Runway 18.
A runway pointing about 090° (east) is Runway 9.
A runway pointing about 270° (west) is Runway 27.
A runway pointing about 360° (north) is Runway 36.

Because a runway can be used in either direction, it has two numbers: Runway 18/36 means the same strip of pavement.
Landing southbound = Runway 18.
Landing northbound = Runway 36.

Runway numbers occasionally change over the years because Earth’s magnetic poles slowly shift, causing the magnetic heading to change enough that the runway must be renumbered.

Here at the Malden Regional Airport, we have Runway 14/32 and Runway 18/36! ✈️☀️☁️

🛫Runway Rundown - The Windsock

A windsock is the large fabric tube you see mounted on a pole at an airport.

It’s important because it shows pilots:

1. Wind direction – The open end faces into the wind, and the narrow end points in the direction the wind is blowing.
2. Approximate wind speed – The more the windsock sticks straight out, the stronger the wind. A limp windsock indicates light winds.

Pilots use this information when taking off and landing because aircraft perform best when they are pointed into the wind. Landing or taking off with a strong tailwind can make the aircraft harder to control and require more runway.

✈️Meet the Stearmans✈️

Each year, we're excited to welcome the Stearmans back to our airport as they stop by to practice their incredible formation flying skills. This talented group of vintage aircraft travels across the country performing at airshows and aviation events, showcasing precision flying and teamwork in the skies.
We are honored that they choose our community as a place to train and prepare for their upcoming performances. If you happen to see these beautiful airplanes in the air or on the ramp, be sure to give them a warm, small town welcome!
Thank you, Stearmans, for making our airport a part of your annual tradition. We look forward to seeing you soar above our town once again!
