NOAA’s "Space Weather Observations at L1 to Advance Readiness – 1" (SOLAR-1)observatory has officially entered operational service, marking a major milestone for the nation’s resilience to space weather events. SOLAR-1 is the first U.S. satellite designed exclusively for continuous, operational space weather observations.

SOLAR-1 (previously known as Space Weather Follow On – Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1), strengthens the nation’s ability to safeguard systems that can be disrupted by space weather, including the electric grid, satellites, communications, aviation, navigation systems, including GPS, national security operations, and human spaceflight.

“Innovation in maritime is moving faster, and the conversation has changed with it,” said Patrick Ryan, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “A few years ago, the focus was on what might be possible down the road. Now we are looking at where these technologies are gaining traction, how they work together and what it will take to apply them safely and effectively.”

The latest report in the ABS "Technology Trends" series does exactly that, with an updated industry roadmap for key innovations moving from development into application.

NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) is usually known for its satellite imagery, especially of hurricanes and other significant storms. But NESDIS also gathers and provides observations, or data to enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime vessel transportation.

Uncrewed Systems (UxS), or autonomous vehicles, are one of these key tools used to collect this data in waters that are too dangerous for human beings to access.
