Recently, a piece of history touched down at Middle Georgia Regional Airport; a 1944 North American P-51 Mustang, one of the most iconic fighter aircraft ever built.

Originally manufactured by North American Aviation, this Mustang served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and remained in Canada after the war, eventually entering civilian life. This historic aircraft has continued to fly, carrying its story forward from one generation of aviation enthusiasts to the next.

The Mustang made a stop here in Macon to top off on fuel before continuing its journey north to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where it took part part in the incredible gathering of aircraft, pilots, and aviation fans that makes Oshkosh one of the biggest events in the aviation world.

Piloted by Shawn Engebretsen, this P-51 continues to earn its place in the skies, appearing at airshows and static display events and giving people the chance to see, hear, and feel a living piece of aviation history.

From a 1944 wartime aircraft to a civilian warbird still flying decades later, this Mustang is a reminder that some legends never really retire.

Fact: The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a highly versatile, four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed for tactical airlift and cargo delivery. It has been in continuous production longer than any other military aircraft in history, serving as a rugged workhorse for air forces worldwide.

Interestingly, it holds the record for the largest and heaviest aircraft to ever land and take off from an aircraft carrier. This incredible feat was accomplished on the USS Forrestal in 1963 completely without the help of tailhooks or catapults.
