TECH TIP:

When replacing bunks on a pontoon boats sometimes it’s difficult to get your new bunks back lined up as they should be at the correct height. Take a paint pen and put a small line along the bottom edge of the old bunks before removal. This is a good reference point to get started before getting everything exact with a tape measure when mounting the new bunks‼️💪🏼

Do you seal your seals??
We do‼️
We use aviation sealant when installing seals on boat trailers hubs and you should too‼️

-RTV is recommended to be used in the Dexter Vault manual when inserting new seals on their hubs and we found the aviation sealant to be easier to apply with the brush type applicator and far less messy‼️

Changing wear sleeves on UFP spindles and other marine axles:

Sleeve part numbers:
- UFP spindles- #060-036-00 (has grease port hole)
- Tie Down Eng. spindles- #060-056-00

Tools:
- Hammer
- Rubber mallet
- Sharp flat blade chisel
- PVC or pipe to match spindle diameter

Instructions:
1. Use hammer and chisel to knick the old wear sleeve starting at the rear of the sleeve closest to the brake mounting fl**ge. ***Use as little force as possible to avoid damage the surface where the sleeves sits***
2. Remove old sleeve.
3. Place new sleeve onto spindle and ALIGN THE GREASE HOLE ON THE SLEEVE WITH THE GREASE OUTLET HOLE ON THE SPINDLE (some early 2000s boats do not have a grease port).
4. Gently hammer new sleeve onto where the sleeve rides with rubber mallet and PVC pipe until it is flush on rear of spindle.
5. Ensure grease outlet holes are aligned enough for grease to come through when using the grease zerk on the end of the spindle.

***Make sure when replacing the inner seal on the hub that you hammer it flush with the back of the hub and not too deep. If you do hammer the seal too deep, it may interfere with the grease outlet port on the spindle and cause the seal to leak fresh grease. ***

Notice anything funny about the caliper and brake pads??

-This trailer came in for a major overhaul and it’s a good thing the brake system wasn’t actually functioning properly! Brake pads installed backwards could’ve caused catastrophic failure of this entire hub/rotor and caliper assembly!

**Check the face of your rotors periodically to ensure your pads are wearing evenly and haven’t separated from the metal backing plate!**

How to build 2x4 boat trailer bunks:

Materials:
- 10”-12” wide heavy duty marine carpet
- Quality lumber
- Stainless staples
- 3/8” x 1 1/2” stainless lag screws

Tools:
- T50 stapler (air or battery powered is ideal)
- Circular saw
- Router for board edges
- Sander to smooth surface the boat will ride on
- Drill/impact for attaching bunks
- Tape measure

Instructions:
1. Cut bunks to ideal length
2. Route edges with round over bit until smooth so the carpet does not tear on a rough edge and sand smooth if needed
**Phoenix bunks require a larger rounded over bit due to hull design**
3. Lay carpet on flat surface
4. Cut carpet with 5-6” of overhang on each end of board
5. If using 10” wide carpet, measure 2 3/4” of carpet along the continuous length of the board. If using 12” carpet, staple carpet along the opposite edge of the board.
6. Staple your first side of carpet down the entire length stretching as you go.
7. Lay the bunk on 2 sawhorses or a roller and tailgate like I use.
8. Stretch, pull, fold, and roll the bunk in one continuous motion then staple every couple inches. Do this the entire length to get a tight fit on the lumber
9. Snip your ends, fold, and staple tightly on the ends of the board. I use my roller and push it against my toolbox to get the ends extra tight
10. Use the hand torch to burn the edges of the carpet to keep it from fraying over time.
11. Paint exposed lumber because why not??

Attaching to trailer:
1. Measure where the old bunks line up on the trailer with the brackets at the back of the trailer
2. Center bunk on rear bracket with the correct over hang off of bracket
3. Pre-drill first pilot hole with 1/4” drill bit and attach bunk with one 3/8” x 1 1/2” stainless lag screw on rear bracket
4. Center bunk on front bracket and attach fasteners
5. Finish centering and attaching bunk to the rest of the brackets and ensure you did not miss any attachment points.
6. Repeat process for all bunks
7. Double check you did not miss any fastening points
8. HAUL OLD MATERIALS OFF WITH YOU
