Missing these? Us too. While they may be gone from Sepulveda and Century Blvds. (for now), you can still find their glow inside LAX. Marking the 25th anniversary of the iconic LAX Gateway pylons, the exhibition LAX Gateway’s Kinetic Light Installation celebrates Paul Tzanetopoulos’s landmark light installation and its enduring role as a welcoming symbol of Los Angeles.

The exhibition brings you closer to Paul’s work behind the LAX Gateway pylons, highlighting his dynamic use of light, color, and technology, and illuminating the creative vision behind one of the city’s most recognizable public artworks.

Along the way, you may discover something new about the vibrant colors that have welcomed millions of travelers to our great city!

More taxiway. More room to move. ✈️

The newly extended Taxiway C is officially open at LAX — marking an important improvement that supports more efficient aircraft movement.

It may seem like just one small piece of the larger airfield, but improvements like this add up as we continue transforming LAX for the future.

From Mines Field to Global Gateway ✈️🌎

Before it became Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the land the airport sits on was known as Mines Field — a modest airfield that laid the foundation for one of the world’s most iconic airports. Today, LAX connects millions of travelers to countless destinations, continuing a legacy of aviation innovation that began nearly a century ago.

1) 1949: Event honoring the re-naming of Los Angeles Municipal Airport to Los Angeles International Airport.

2) 1936: At the National Air Races at Mines Field at the Los Angeles Municipal Airport, a stunt with a motorcyclist who balanced himself to a glider was performed. On the left, but not pictured, is an aircraft towing the glider. When the glider reached a maximum speed and height (3,000-4,000 feet), the glider detached himself from the tow aircraft and performed various stunts.

3) 1936: View of the National Air Races at Mines Field at Los Angeles Municipal Airport.

4) 1936: National Air Races at Mines Field, Air Force A-17 planes from March Field lined up prior to starting their engines for take-off.

5) June 7, 1930: Actress Viola Peters at the dedication ceremony of Los Angeles Municipal Airport, June 7, 1930 (Hangar #1, built by Curtis-Wright Co., is shown in the background). The structure was rededicated on December 20, 1990, after being restored by the AVIA Development Group for cargo and office use.

6) 1929: The Graf Zeppelin visited Mines Field Airport during its around-the-world flight and the Good Year blimp at Mines Field during the large dirigible visit.
