Everyone is really worried about the recent spike in COVID-19 infections around the world. With airlines canceling flights, and countries changing entry requirements - travel could not be more unpredictable. A lot of folks opted to stay home and avoid large gatherings, and for many this meant canceling vacations over the winter break :(

In these uncertain times, we want to reassure our customers with some facts:

1) No matter what, Tripyacht is open for business. We are still manning the phones, and answering your emails. Our business was born during the pandemic, and now we are immune to it :) So as long as the internet is still working, you can count on us to plan your next sailing trip!

2) Sailing is one of the safest ways to spend time on the water somewhere warm. Think about it: you are on a boat, just with your friends and family, away from the crowds, enjoying the breeze - textbook social distancing with margarita on the side!

3) Discounts! Some Caribbean bases are offering up to 30% discounts on their charters during the peak season! This is a great opportunity to finally get that catamaran you’ve been checking out but never booked!

4) A lot of bases are offering flexible booking terms to accommodate travel disruptions caused by COVID-19. Do not be afraid that your reservation will be wasted if you can’t make it to the base on time for COVID-related reasons. Reach out to learn more!

5) All major sailing destinations remain open to tourists, but may have additional entry and exit restrictions, please check with health authorities of a country you are planning to visit, or reach out to us.

Last but not least: use good judgment while planning your trip. Some of us are more vulnerable than others, and to some traveling now may not be worth the risk. When sailing is too risky, a good sailor stays put.

Entertainment
Sometimes, some programs offer you onboard or local entertainment when cruising. For example, you might find yoga classes or underwater thermal spring excursions.

New book recommendation alert!

Robin Knox-Johnston's sailing book, “A World of My Own”, is an exciting account of one of the world's greatest sailing adventures!

More than 40 years have passed since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston made history by becoming the first man to sail a solo, non-stop trip around the globe. He sailed between 1968-1969.

He tells us about his incredible journey and all of the obstacles he had to face with humor and sincerity.

The drinking water in the tanks got dirty. A thunderstorm disabled the radio. The mast collapsed. The tiller was missing. So much went wrong. Nevertheless, he persisted and continued on his way.

Pick up “A World of My Own” today to read the gripping, uninhibited, and moving account of one of the greatest sea adventures of our time. It’s an absolute bestseller and a story that will continue to inspire.

We enjoy the sea, traveling, and everything else about exploring our globe.

There are endless things to explore: beautiful beaches, fun islands, and exciting marine life. That’s why we always look for ways to preserve nature and the ocean.

The global problems that are facing the modern world

Excess carbon dioxide
The balance of chemical compounds in oceanic ecosystems is disturbed when the water's acidity increases. In acidic water, coral reefs die, and marine life like oysters, bivalve mollusks, and sea urchins disappear.

Fertilizer runoff from fields
Intensive agriculture has led to the uncontrolled use of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Water bodies become muddy and lifeless, flora and fauna are forced to migrate to other areas, and many organisms die.

Chemical waste from households and industry
Even though many types of chemical discharge have been prohibited, high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls and other hazardous substances are found in the deep sea. Even a single pollutant has a devastating effect on the ecosystem.

Mining and oil spills
When constructing offshore drilling platforms, environmental impact is rarely considered. In some countries, there is little control over the activities of drilling platforms. Often, disasters are only known when it becomes impossible to hide them.

Disposal of radioactive waste
Disposing radioactive waste became a consideration during the atomic era. This was relevant in the USA, USSR/Russia, Great Britain, Japan, and other countries that needed to dispose of waste. We still need to be mindful of this process today.

Plastic pollution
According to various estimates, 1 to 2.5 million tons of plastic waste get into our waters every year. Microplastic has long been "walking" along our food chain, reaching our dining table and entering our bodies.

Our Earth depends on us! And if we can join forces, then we can build a better world.

You know choosing a destination is important, but your destination impacts far more than your vacation excursions. Here are the other things your destination will affect:

4. Costs of goods and services

A bareboat charter is not an all-inclusive, resort-like experience. You will need to buy groceries and cook, or go ashore and eat at a restaurant. That’s why it is usually a good idea to get a sense of local prices beforehand. Typically, prices are higher on small islands because everything is supplied from the mainland. Other cost factors to consider are the cost of mooring and berth at the marina, fuel, and fresh water.

5. Access to basic infrastructure

More densely populated areas (like the coast of Croatia) offer a wide selection of marinas and well-developed infrastructure. Therefore, finding fuel, fresh water, groceries, medical care, cell phone signal, and other needs is easy. More remote islands typically offer less of that, meaning you will need to plan your trip and budget your resources carefully.

6. Sailing conditions

Make sure to check local weather before you travel for the time of your travel. There are many great marine weather apps out there, so get one before you sail. You’ll get a sense of how easy it will be to sail there before you go.

Also, pay attention to the consistency of weather conditions. It’s ideal for sailing when waves are not very high. You also want winds to be strong enough to go fast but not too strong that they are overwhelming.

Conclusion

We've covered the six most essential areas that a responsible skipper needs to research before picking a destination. You can go deeper into this information by looking online because there is a lot out there. Local sailing guides are a great resource, too, and most boat owners provide a copy along with paper charts of the area.

How can you choose the best route for your sailing trip?

When it comes to travel, your destination is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

Your decision will impact...

1. The places you can visit, what you’ll see, and the experiences you’ll have

And chances are, you want to spend your sailing vacation in a beautiful place! One that will let you see and do a lot of cool things.

Some locations are more remote and are great to see marine life, dive, snorkel, and fish. Others are more crowded and have vibrant coastal towns with fun shops and nightlife. Only you know what you love, and there is no “right” destination to choose.

So, create a list of your dream destinations and the must-do experiences on your bucket list.

Discuss everything with your crew, then finalize those plans.

2. Distances and daylight

Disregard this section if you’re going to cruise around the same marina, but if you’re not, then you need to check how far each location is from one another.

Planning to sail a lot might seem fun but can get exhausting quickly, especially if the weather doesn't cooperate.

And being in a rush is stressful and will often be when sailors get into weather trouble.

But with all the weather alerts that are easy to access, you’re going to be completely fine.

Another thing to be aware of is when the sun usually sets in your destination. For example, The Caribbean sailing season is in winter, so days are shorter. This means if you need to sail to a further destination, you won't be able to do much else that day. That’s because most of the charters prohibit night sailing, so day sailing is your only option.

3. How many countries you’re visiting

Some islands are sovereign countries with their own customs and immigration. So, if you are planning to island-hop, research guidelines ahead of time to make sure your crew has all documents in order.

Also, clearing customs and immigration can take a few hours and cost money. This process is inevitable, but much better if you know what you need in advance.
