Every week there’s a new story about a β€œmoving company” that took a family’s deposit, and sometimes their belongings, and disappeared.

After 126 years in this business, here’s our advice: spend 10 minutes verifying your mover before you book. It’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy.

Share it with anyone who’s moving this year.

Choosing a mover is one of the biggest trust decisions a family makes.

You hand strangers the keys to everything you own, and you're doing it in an industry known for surprise fees and broken promises.

That's why we're proud to share that Johnson Storage & Moving has been named the 2026 ColoradoBiz Top Company in Consumer Business. πŸ†

The judges didn't just compare us to other movers. They put us up against Colorado's best consumer businessesβ€”the companies families rely on every day.

Here is what that means if you're planning a move:

β†’ The crew at your door belongs to a team that has been independently recognized, not a name pulled from a lead list.

β†’ Your quote comes from a company whose reputation has been on the line for more than a century.

β†’ Your belongings are handled by a United Van Lines agent with the systems and accountability to move you across town, across the country, or overseas.

An award like this isn't earned in one year. It's earned over 126 years of showing up when we said we would, through generations of crews and generations of Colorado families who trusted us with their homes.

Thank you, ColoradoBiz, and congratulations to every honoree this year.

Consumer protection πŸ—’οΈ
What your mover actually owes you

There's a box on your moving paperwork that decides what happens on the worst day.

Almost nobody reads it.

Two options. Full Value Protection means your mover is responsible for the replacement value of what's lost or damaged, that's the default.

Released Value is the other one. It's free, and your mover's responsibility is calculated by weight. Not value. Weight.

Which means a cast-iron skillet is an important object. Your grandmother's wedding photographs weigh almost nothing, so that's about what they're worth.
It's a legitimate choice. But it is a choice, and you sign for it.

So before moving day: which level is marked on your paperwork, and did you sign anything waiving Full Value Protection?

We've been handing families these documents since 1900. We'd rather read ours with you than have you find out later. 🏑

Behind the scenes at the Johnson Truck Pull πŸ“Έ

Turns out it wasn't just about the truck. Between rounds, our team hit the dunk tank, caught up with friends, and just enjoyed being together.

This is what we love about days like this: it's not just an event; it's a reminder of whom we get to work alongside every day.

Great people. Good laughs. A team that shows up for each other (and isn't afraid to take a cold splash for a good cause). πŸ˜„πŸ’¦

Thanks to everyone who came out and made this one to remember.

They just keep coming! πŸš›πŸ’₯

Three teams, three videos, one incredible day. If you haven't figured it out yet, pulling a semi-truck with nothing but rope and pure determination is a lot harder (and a lot more fun) than it looks.

This crew brought their A-game, and you can see it in every step. No engines, no shortcuts just grit, teamwork, and a whole lot of hype from the crowd.

That's the spirit behind the Johnson Truck Pull, year after year: people showing up for each other, and for a cause bigger than any one of us.
Thanks to everyone who pulled, cheered, sponsored, and showed up together, we raised $15K for Easter Seals and Inclusive Higher Ed. 🧑

If you missed the first two pulls, check our page; this crew wasn't the only one giving it their all.

Every year, our team does something a little unusual: we pull a truck. By hand. As a team. πŸš›πŸ’ͺ

It's harder than it looks, and that's kind of the point. This year's Johnson Truck Pull brought our crew, our sponsors, and our community together for a cause that matters: Easter Seals and Inclusive Higher Education.

Watch the team dig in, pull together, and cross the line because when Johnson Cares shows up, we go all in.

The result? $15,000 raised to help create more inclusive opportunities in our community.

This isn't just a fun team tradition (though it definitely is that too) β€” it's a reminder of why we do what we do. We move people. We move communities forward.

Huge thanks to our sponsors, our pullers, and everyone who came out to support this cause. This is what Johnson Cares is all about. 🧑

Two families can get an estimate from the same mover on the same day and have completely different protection. The difference is one word on the page, and almost nobody reads it.

Estimates come in two kinds.

A binding estimate is a guarantee. For the services listed on it, that's the number, you cannot be required to pay more at delivery. Add a garage full of boxes after the fact and it has to be redone in writing, but absent that, the number holds.

A non-binding estimate is not a guarantee. It's a careful projection, and your final charges come from actual weight and actual services.

That doesn't make it a worse choice, it makes it a different one. And federal rules put a floor under you either way: at delivery, a mover cannot require you to pay more than 110 percent of a non-binding estimate before your things come off the truck. Anything beyond that gets billed after 30 days.

Neither kind is the trap. Not knowing which one you signed is.

So here's what to look for on the paperwork:

πŸ“¦ Is it in writing, and is the word binding or non-binding printed on it?
πŸ“¦ Does it list the services it covers, not just a number?
πŸ“¦ Did two documents come with it, the Department of Transportation's Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move?

That last one is quietly the most useful. Handing you those two is not a courtesy. A mover is required to furnish both with your written estimate, as a copy or a link. If nobody did, you've learned something before you signed anything.

We've been handing families that paperwork since 1900, and we're ProMover certified through the American Trucking Associations' Moving & Storage Conference. Read every line of ours. We'd rather you understood it than trusted us for it. 🏑

The propane tank is always the surprise. 😯

It's moving day, the truck is half loaded, and someone walks out of the garage holding the grill tank. And the crew has to say no, not because anyone's being difficult, but because it legally cannot ride on that truck.

Here's the list worth knowing now, while there's still time to do something about it:

πŸ“¦ Propane tanks, gas cans, anything holding fuel
πŸ“¦ Paint, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals
πŸ“¦ Car batteries, am******on, gunpowder
πŸ“¦ Candles, yes, really
πŸ“¦ Live plants, and of course pets, who ride with you

Then there's a second list.
Things we could take, but would rather you carry yourself:
Passports, prescriptions, jewelry, wedding albums, your kid's artwork from second grade.

Not because they'd be unsafe with us. Because those are the ones that can't be replaced, and there's no good reason for them to be anywhere but your own back seat.

Use up what you can over the next few weeks. Hand the rest to a neighbor. Your future self, standing in the driveway on moving day, holding a propane tank, will thank you. 🏑
