america’s coolest airport™ was on hand to giveaway cooling towels and swag for runners to help them for race day. A huge shoutout to our awesome LGB volunteers who kept our booth flying high and brought the energy all weekend long! ✈️💙

The month was October and the year was 1965. The main roadway at Long Beach Airport was named Donald Douglas Drive, honoring Donald Douglas, founder of the Douglas Aircraft Company, which built aircraft right here in Long Beach. Douglas Aircraft Company was later acquired by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in 1967, forming McDonnell Douglas and continuing the legacy of aviation innovation on our campus. We think these photos of aircraft being built are pretty cool and we hope you do, too! ✈️

It’s not every day you get to meet the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds!

Last Friday evening, Long Beach Airport conducted a full-scale emergency response drill. The triennial preparedness exercise, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) every three years, tested the Airport’s emergency response procedures, coordination and readiness in the event of an aircraft accident. We are thankful for all of the volunteers as well as local, state and federal agencies who helped make this important exercise come together.

On Sept. 25, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., we will be conducting a full-scale emergency exercise. This preparedness drill is required by FAA and will test the speed and effectiveness of first responders and LGB staff in response to a simulated emergency. Emergency vehicles and smoke may be visible on the airfield. This is not an actual emergency, and no impact to aircraft operations is anticipated. 🚒 ✈️

Meet Public Affairs Assistant II Sarah Boutros!

Sarah plays an integral part of our Public Affairs team supporting media and community relations. She helps oversee the Careers Taking Flight program and other large-scale projects at LGB! When not working, she enjoys going to the gym, swimming at the beach, visiting SoCal breweries with her husband and playing board games with family and friends. Her future LGB destination of choice is traveling to Honolulu to visit one of her best friends and hitting the hiking trails. ✈️ 🌴

Last week marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month and LGB wanted to share a history highlight about John Montijo, an experienced flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I. Montijo moved to Long Beach and became one of the earliest licensed Hispanic pilots in the United States! He even provided flight instruction to Amelia Earhart! ✈️
