Close Quarters Handling – The “Art” of Docking and Maneuvering in Tight Spaces

The “Docking” Gene
When I first contemplated writing this article on Close Quarters Handling, I was tempted to write about it as an art form. But this implies that there is something elusive and rare, possessed by a select few extraordinary skippers and generally unattainable by the average boater – something like a “Docking” gene. Anyone who has watched a fishing captain back a 90-foot Viking into a double slip in a 15-knot crosswind in Cabo might be tempted to believe this. It’s like watching Eddie VanHalen play guitar....

During our delivery run today we monitored a May Day call from a vessel in distress just South of Half Moon Bay, CA & 40 NM off shore. We were one of the closest vessels to the coordinates. So, the Coast Guard advised us to continue to the scene. It was a father & son on a recreational fishing vessel called "Sashimi" out of Pillar Point Harbor. She looked like a 28 foot North River, blue with twin outboards. Father may have had a heart attack and was unresponsive. When we arrived on scene, the rescue swimmer had him in the litter and they were hoisting him up to the chopper. It was tough hearing the distress in the son's voice over the VHF. Our thoughts and prayers for a good outcome are with them today! 🙏. If anyone knows how the father is doing, please let us know.
