🚢⚓ Ketchikan Cruise Ship Safety Tips – Local Edition ⚓🚢
Welcome to Ketchikan, where on some days there are more visitors than salmon… and that’s saying something! With thousands of cruise passengers exploring town on busy days, here are a few safety tips from your friends at the Ketchikan Fire Department.
✅ Use the crosswalks. We know that giant cruise ship is hard to miss, but that doesn’t make you invincible. Cross at marked crosswalks and keep an eye out for traffic. Local safety efforts specifically encourage visitors to use designated crossings.
✅ Look up from your phone. That selfie with the totem pole is great. That selfie while walking into a light pole? Less great.
✅ Dress for all four seasons. In Ketchikan, you can experience sunshine, rain, wind, and “What just happened?” all before lunch.
✅ Watch your step. Our sidewalks can be wet. If you hear a local say, “It’s not that slippery,” that’s usually right before someone demonstrates gravity.
✅ Give wildlife some space. If you see a bear, remember: it’s not part of the excursion package. Take photos from a safe distance and let the bear continue its important work of being a bear.
✅ Stay aware near the waterfront. The fish are supposed to be in the water—not the tourists.
Most importantly, enjoy our beautiful community, support local businesses, and remember: if you’re lost, confused, or accidentally followed a local on their way to work thinking it was a tour, we’re happy to point you in the right direction.
Have fun, stay safe, and welcome to Alaska’s First City! 🚢🐻🌲☔
